U.S. Bank, Boise

This is the celebration of Law Day when you can ask a lawyer a question for no charge. The phone lines are available from 5 am this morning to 4 pm this afternoon. When you call they will try to connect to a lawyer to get you answer as quickly as possible and if not they will get your question answered with-in a week. There are three numbers to call to ask a question. 353-1783, 353-1628, 353-4794 are the numbers and if they are busy just keep trying.

Alano Club

"The Sword of Zerro" (from Z to shining Z) is the latest show for Prairie Dog Productions at the Alano Club. The show opens this weekend and will run every Friday and Saturday night until June 7th. There are also two matinees on May 11th and 18th. Show times are 7:15 and the matinees are at 2 pm. The family friendly production is a musical, comedy, parody, farce and take off on the character of Zorro. You should call ahead to the box office at 336-7383 for tickets as they frequently sell out. The theatre is located off the corner of Cassia and Latah in Boise.

Veterans Memorial Park

The American Lung Association of Idaho will have a free barbeque on Thursday May 1st from 6 pm to 7:30 pm at Veterans Memorial Park. Specialty made desserts will be auctioned off to raise funds to help send children to asthma camp this summer. In addition raffle tickets will be sold for other donated items. Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no charge for the barbeque.

Ada County Library

This is "Safe Kids Week" and everyone is invited to the Ada Community Library off the corner of 5-mile and Victory roads for activities all week long. On Saturday there will be games and activities on the 5 safety topics for summer safety for kids. Water, pedestrian, motor vehicle, helmet and fire safety are the 5 topics and there is no charge with things happening from 10 am to 2 pm.

Boise Centre on the Grove

The 21st annual Beaux Arts Wine Festival is tonight at the Boise Centre on the Grove at 5:30. Tonight is the wine tasting and silent auction and tickets are $55 at the door. Over 250 wineries will be sampling their wines with live music, appetizers and many silent auction items. The funds raised help the Beaux Arts Society and their support of the Boise Art Museum.

ReStore

ReStore is a new fundraising effort for Habit for Humanity. It is a thrift store for building products. Donations are accepted from building product retailers and from individuals. Items are then sold in the store located in the shopping center off Overland and 5 mile and the funds raised are used to build affordable housing. The store hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am - 6 pm.

Idaho Historical Museum

"Fundsy" is the largest charitable event in the area and it is coming up on May 3rd at the Boise Centre on the Grove, but the live auction starts today on Zidaho.com. Bids are already being accepted for 12 items that have been carefully selected and will contribute to the same charitable organizations selected to receive special brick and mortar funds. The three recipients this year are the Friends of the Historic Museum, The Learning Lab and Neighborhood Housing Services. Click link below to get the on-line auction.

Ticket sales for the St. Jude’s Dream Home are continuing but today is the last day to buy a ticket and still be eligible to win a year’s worth of groceries from Albertsons. A fishing derby this Saturday will benefit the Boise Capital Lions Club and it’s open to all ages. The cost for the derby is $20 for an adult but also includes up to 3 children if you sign up in advance. If you wait until Saturday it will cost you $25. Boise Centre on the Grove

The Idaho Community Foundation is turning 20 years old. The Foundation helps gather contributions for charitable organizations throughout the state and will be honoring its founders at a luncheon on Wednesday May 21st at the Boise Centre on the Grove. Downtown Caldwell

The work on Indian Creek in the Caldwell area is nearly complete. 6 years ago Indian Creek was completely buried and many people didn’t even know it went through downtown Caldwell. Now after about a year and a half of construction the ribbon cutting has been set. On Saturday April 26th there will be a community clean up in the morning followed by the ribbon cutting at 1:00 pm and a fishing derby for children age 14 and under at 2:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Friday April 25th is Arbor Day and everyone is encouraged to pick up a free seedling and plant it. The seedlings will be available on Friday only at any of the Home Depot locations across the valley. Boise State University

This is “Lift up America” day and its chance to make a difference to the needy in our community. Tyson Foods along with members of the Boise State Football team help lend a hand to local organizations with food donations. This was also a chance to start a chain reaction of kindness by making a donation yourself to the Idaho Foodbank. Several schools in the area and others have been holding food drives and today they brought those donations to the Morrison Center Parking lot at Boise State.

Garden City Library

Funds are being raised through a book sale at the Garden City Library. The books are donations from patrons and will be sold at $1 for hardback and 50 cents for paperbacks. The money raised will be used for purchase of new books and other library materials. In addition to the books there are also some C-D’s, videos and puzzles. The sale hours are 9 am to 3 pm today and tomorrow and 12 noon to 3 pm Sunday with the remaining items on Sunday at half price.

Boise State

The Boise State Men’s tennis team will be in action this weekend at home. The Broncos are ranked 35th in the nation and will face the University of California Santa Barbara first and Weber State later in a double header on Sunday. This is also the last home match for the seniors on the team. The Bronco men have enjoyed top rankings for the last several years the seniors have been a big part of it. The action will take place at the Appleton Tennis Center just behind the Taco Bell Arena and there is no charge to attend. In the event of bad weather the matches will be moved to the indoor Boas Tennis Center.

Idaho Horse Park

The Horse Expo starts tomorrow at the Idaho Horse Park near the Idaho Center in the Nampa area. The everything horse event starts tomorrow at 12 and runs through the weekend. The cost is $10 for adults, children $5 for age 6-12 and under 6 is free. Seniors 65 and over is also $5. You can get more information about the event from the Horse Council website below.

Nampa Civic Center

A free conference is being presented by the Idaho Financial Literacy Coalition to help you with your financial decisions. The conference is coming to the Nampa Civic Center this Friday. “Your Money Matters” will be from 8:30 am to Noon and features 3 hours of classes and workshops by industry experts and there is no charge. You do need to R.S.V.P. by calling 378-0200, ext 751. A free continental breakfast will also be served from 8:00 am to 8:30 am.

Stagecoach Theatre

If you like comedies then “Wonder of the World” is for you. The latest production has an adult theme due to language so is not suitable for everyone. There are lots of laughs and it will open this Friday night and run again on Saturday. Next week there are shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in addition to a matinee on Sunday and the final week has shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Show times are 8:15 on Friday and Saturdays and 7:30 on Thursdays with the Sunday matinee at 2:00. The theatre is located in the covered portion of the Hillcrest shopping center off Overland and Orchard. You should call the box office at 342-2000 to reserve your tickets.

St. Luke's Meridian

“Tar Wars” is a poster contest for 5th grade students where doctors from Idaho Academy of Family Physicians go to classrooms and explain the dangers of tobacco. Student then compete to create a poster aimed at keeping their fellow classmates from ever trying tobacco products. This is the state competition and the winner from here will be sent to Washington D.C. for national competition.

Idaho Youth Ranch, Rupert

It’s the “Lend a Hand” with the NBC Today show and we are at the Idaho Youth Ranch. Al Roker and the Today show helps worthy charities across the nation every year and this year they are starting here in Idaho and the Idaho Youth Ranch is the recipient. Al came in this morning on a horse to the ranch with a truck load of items for the ranch and talked with all the main supports and with the children who live here at the ranch.

“Children Are Our Flowers” helps children in rural communities with an outreach program that is an after school prevention program. The S.T.A.A.R.’s program stands for students taking an active role and helps with prevention of drug use through the Lutheran Community Services Northwest. All you need to do is shop at the participating nurseries on April 18-20 and a portion of the sales will benefit the program, just look for a poster to see if it is a participating nursery.

Boise State University

“Joy Ride” is the latest production for Idaho Dance Theatre and will open next Thursday night at the Special Events at Boise State University. The show features original music and live performance by the Langroise Trio in addition to the dancers. The show is a collaboration of efforts between choreographers and features a wide variety of dance. There are only four performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. The Fashion Impact Benefit will be this Saturday night at the Doubletree Riverside and will help the Junior League of Boise. The style show and auction raises funds for Junior League projects like “Especially Me” and “Kids in foster care”. Tickets to the event are $50 each in advance and $60 at the door. The grand opening for Ruby River Steakhouse will benefit the Special Olympics World Winter Games. Boise Music Week is coming and the musical this year is “Singing in the Rain”. The event features something every day for the 9 days starting April 25 and goes through May 3rd. Boise Public Library Warehouse

The annual Library Book Sale is this weekend. The Boise Public Library will be selling books and other materials starting tomorrow morning from 9 am to 7 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm then on Sunday is noon to 4 pm with everything left half off. Tonight is a sneak preview from 4 pm to 7 pm for members of the Friends of the Boise Public Library with memberships for sale as well. Proceeds of the sale go to help fund collections for the branch libraries.

The tax filing deadline is approaching quickly. The deadline this year is Tuesday April 15th and everyone is encouraged to file electronically and that includes business as well this year. Hispanic Cultural Center

The Hispanic Cultural Center will be hosting a Health Fair this Friday from 1 pm to 6 pm. The event is designed to help answer questions and help identify potential problems for everyone. You have a chance to beat Coach Pete. Boise State head football coach Chris Petersen will compete in a 5K run this Saturday morning starting at the BSU Recreation Center. If you can beat Coach Pete he will personally donate $5 per runner which will go to the general scholarship fund. If you would like to participate you can get signed up by calling 426-1131 and the cost is $10 for students and $20 for non-students. If you wait until the last minute to sign up it will cost you $5 extra. The race starts at 9:30 on Saturday morning.
