Years ago Judge Jon Vehlow offered to take a repeat offender fishing if he would just complete his probation. He did and the mentoring process worked for him and now does for others. Bronco StadiumIt’s the long awaited opening of the Boise State football season. The Broncos open at home against the Weber State Wildcats. Years ago these two teams were regular season opponents when both were members of the Big Sky Conference. Boise State has since moved to Division one and a member of the Western Athletic Conference. There is a lot of excitement for tonight’s game which will be live on Channel 7 at 7:00 pm.

Asstiance League of BoiseOperation School Bell is nearly ready for the school year. Volunteers from the Assistance League of Boise assemble and prepare new clothing and coats for deserving children in Ada County. Clothing will be distributed starting on September 19th with help from members of the Boise State football team. More volunteers are needed so women who are interested are encouraged to stop the Assistance League of Boise to get information. The League is located directly across Glenwood from Memorial Stadium.

Ann Morrison ParkThe annual Light the Night walk is coming Thursday October 4th and will be at Ann Morrison Park this year. The family designed event is a non-competitive two and a half mile walk in downtown Boise to raise money for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Hawthorne Elementary SchoolProject Tutoring is in its second year at Hawthorne Elementary School and 22 other schools in the district. The goal is to help students who teachers wish they could spend an extra 30 minutes with but can’t because they are teaching the rest of the class. Boise Dispatch Center - Noon NewsThe fire danger remains high in Idaho because of dry conditions. While campgrounds remain open in the forests no campfires are allowed even in the campfire rings. These conditions are not likely to change until rain and or snow cover the area. This is one of the worst fire seasons on record and we all need to do our part to help and vehicles should be checked and not driven off road and trailers need to be checked as well.

Boise State NursingWe have a critical shortage of Nurses in the Gem state and the Nursing program at Boise State University is trying to make a difference. The program continues to expand and starting today students can earn not only a Bachelor degree but can go on to receive a Masters in Nursing. Classes for the Fall semester begin today.

Bronco StadiumThe Boise Noon Optimist Football kicked off today with the annual Jamboree. It’s really a picture day and controlled scrimmage for the teams who began their practice sessions two weeks ago. The program has grown over the past 50 plus years to involve more than 4,500 youngsters as players and cheerleaders. The program has its own complex on Hillroad but still need help financially to double the size and number of the fields that also are used for soccer and as a Boise City park. Expo Idaho - Noon NewsThere are only a few days left for the Western Idaho Fair. Many of the specialty acts have changed from the first few days of the fair and you can see some unique ones in the final days. One of the acts is country singer Kyle Wyley who performs on the Garden Stage 2, 5, and 8:30 pm today. He brings a unique style a wide variety of country music. Basque MuseumThe Basque Wine Festival is tonight at 5:30 pm and will be held throughout the entire Basque Block. The festival raises funds for the programs and operations for the Basque Museum which opened a new exhibit in July about Basque Whaling. Nampa Civic CenterThe Idaho chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will hold their annual banquet this weekend at the Nampa Civic Center. The banquet raises funds to provide habitat for wild turkeys and helps other game birds as well. Expo Idaho - MondayToday is KTVB Family Day at the Western Idaho Fair. The day is a smoke free and non-alcohol day designed for families. We started the morning talking about 4-H competition with horses. The morning saw English style riding with Western riding later in the day. Expo Idaho - SaturdayDay number 2 for the Western Idaho Fair means a full day of activities for the agricultural exhibits. Members of the 4-H and FFA started their competition early this morning and the show rings will stay busy through the weekend. Many of the animals on display will be a part of the live market auction on Tuesday and everyone is invited to attend and bid on the livestock.

Several new and interesting acts will be featured throughout the fair including the Idaho off-road 4x4 club. Expo Idaho (Morning show)It’s day one of the Western Idaho Fair at Expo Idaho. In addition to all the attractions be sure to stop by the area for the Wishing Star Foundation. Raffle tickets are being sold to win one of three playhouses. The houses have been built by volunteers and the funds raised will be used to grant wishes to local children with life threatening illnesses. Tickets are $2 each and you can buy as many as you like to improve your chances. The drawings will be held the last day of the fair at 4pm.

Snake River YamahaThe second annual Ride for the Red is coming up next weekend. The ride will start at Snake River Yamaha and raises money for the American Red Cross of greater Idaho. The ride is open to anyone with a motorcycle and will feature live music, food and a raffle with a chance to win a 2007 Vstar motorcycle. Discovery Center of IdahoIdaho Space Days continue at the Discovery Center with the downlink from the International Space Station scheduled this afternoon with the astronauts and the 18 selected students from Idaho. Later today the children will have a chance to speak directly with the crew on the space station and ask them special questions. We’ll have special live coverage from 2pm to 4pm or you can come to the discovery center to be a part of the fun.

Discovery Center of IdahoIt’s Idaho Space Days at the Discovery Center of Idaho. This is all in association with the current mission for the Space Shuttle. Barbara Morgan our teacher in space from Idaho will be holding a special downlink with students tomorrow from the Discovery Center. Winery at Eagle KnollThe Rocky Mountain Challenge is coming up next weekend. The 5k Race and Family Health Fair will be held at the Winery at Eagle Knoll from 10am to 6pm on Saturday August 18. Warhawk Air Museum, NampaIts B-25 days at the Warhawk Air Museum in the Nampa area. The Mitchell B-25 bomber was instrumental during World War II and the Doolittle Raiders under the command of Jimmy Doolittle bombed Tokyo, Japan near the end of the war. It was considered a near suicide mission. Three of the original raiders are here for special presentations along with Jonna Doolittle, the granddaughter of Jimmy Doolittle and she wrote a book about her grandfather and his role during WWII. Saturday and Sunday are the days to see and even get a ride in a B-25 with a membership donation to the museum. The hours are 10 am to 4 pm Saturday and 10 am to 3 pm Sunday.

Blue Cross of IdahoThe 5th annual Blue Cruise is this Sunday. It’s a bike tour with 4 different lengths designed fro riders of all abilities. The funds raised will go to help Big Brothers/Big Sisters of southwest Idaho and Garden City Community Clinic. The event kicks off at Blue Cross of Idaho on Eagle road at 7 am and you can sign up at the last minute. The registration is $30 per rider with $20 for age 16 and under. Nampa Civic CenterTomorrow night August 8th is Community Fun Night in the Nampa area. The Nampa Civic Center will host the annual free event from 6 pm to 10 pm. There are three stages of entertainment with a karaoke stage inside and everything from obstacle courses to pony rides outside and a climbing wall. All events are designed for families and there is no charge.

Crane Creek Country ClubA fundraising golf tournament is being held today at the Crane Creek Country Club for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southwest Idaho. The organization is one of the best know and longest established mentoring program in the valley. Funds raised go to help train the volunteers who interact with children from single parent homes and make a difference in their lives.

Boise DepotThe official launch of the Idaho quarter was today at the Boise Depot. All 50 states developed a design for the back of the U.S. quarter and Idaho’s features the peregrine falcon and the date Idaho became a state. The Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson and Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne joined the Director of the United States Mint Ed Moy for the launch of the coin.

Kuna High SchoolThe Idaho Peacemakers Quilt show will be this weekend at Kuna High School. The annual event raises funds for the Kuna Rural Volunteer Fire Department and the Kuna Food Bank. Over 250 quilts will be on display with some for sale. The cost of the show is $4 and you are asked to bring a donation for the food bank. The show times are 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday and 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday.

Lakeview Park, NampaNational Night Out is coming next Tuesday but to help kick things off a special crime prevention and safety day will be held in Nampa’s Lakeview Park this Saturday. The event is from 10 am to 3 pm and is all free. Demonstrations, stickers and digital registration will be available for the children. The DigiKids people will take photos of your children and give parents a C-D with the information just in case anything would every happen to your child. The entire event is free for everyone.
