September 2007 ArchivesNampa Optimist FootballThe Optimist Football season continues involving more than 4,500 players, cheerleaders and volunteers. Each year the number of youngsters interested grows with the growth in the valley and that means that some will be turned away. The Nampa program has several fundraisers throughout the year including their involvement with the 50/50 value cards in association with the Boise program. The Nampa Outback Steakhouse will host a special fundraiser in the next few weeks and we’ll have details later.

Nampa AirportA special “Air Show” is set for tomorrow night at the Nampa Airport. Local aerobatic pilot Greg Poe will highlight the show which will also feature static displays and skydivers. The event raises money to help with the fight against Meth. The cost is $5 per family suggested and the gates will open at 4 pm with the show scheduled from 6 pm to 8 pm. All the money raised will go to the Idaho Meth Project.

Idaho State Historical MuseumYour chance to learn more about history first hand will come tomorrow. It’s the annual “Museum comes to Life” day at the Idaho State Historical Museum. Re-enactors will be on hand to portray characters from history and answer questions about what life was like in that period of history. It’s a great event for the entire family from 9 am to 5 pm and there is no charge to attend. Exhibits and demonstrations will be set up both inside and outside the museum in Julia Davis Park.

Bronco StadiumIt’s game day for Boise State Football as the Broncos prepare for Southern Mississippi tonight. This is also the night to help Operation Wishbook. Everyone is asked to bring a brand new book for a child and there will be collection barrels at every entrance. If you don’t have time to pick up a book before the game you can always make a cash donation. Operation Wishbook then gets the books to children who might not otherwise ever have a book of their own. This is also a blue and orange night with fans asked to wear either blue or orange depending on which section they are seated.

Winery at Eagle KnollThe Eagle area continues to grow and so do needs. The Treasure Valley YMCA has been asked to consider building another facility. The Winery at Eagle Knoll is stepping up to help by selling some of its overstock wines by the case at a discount to us and give the proceeds to the YMCA. The sale will start on the 4th of October and will run through the 14th. The wine will be out front and the winery is located just off Highway 16 and south of Emmett.

Nampa Civic Center“Fiddler on the Roof” is the latest production for Music Theatre Idaho and will open this weekend at the Nampa Civic Center. Shows will be this Friday and Saturday with an additional matinee on Saturday and then next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Tickets are available for all shows but are going quickly. You should call the box office at 468-2385 or you can click on the link below. If you mention when you call that you saw it on the air this morning or add that to the comments line when you go to the theatre web site you will receive a 20% discount for your tickets.

Albertsons Corporate Office - Noon NewsThe second annual walk for the National Alliance on Mental Illness will be this weekend and starts at the corporate office for Albertsons on Parkcenter Blvd. There are no registration fees, everyone is just encouraged to get sponsors for their effort, if you do raise $100 or more you will receive an official walk T-shirt. Boise Centre on the GroveThe Boise State Athletic Department is combining efforts for Make-a-Wish Foundation of Idaho to grant wishes to children with life threatening medical conditions. It’s the annual serving up wishes on Monday October 8th, where athletes and coaches from Boise State serve guests with a fabulous meal at the Boise Centre on the Grove. Tickets are still available for $125 each or you could still sign up as a sponsor. For more information call 345-Wish (345-9474).

Idaho Athletic Club“Silver Sneakers” is a fitness and flexibility program for seniors. Anyone who is Medicare eligible can participate in the program. Classes meet 5 days a week at the Idaho Athletic Clubs and the emphasis is fitness and the importance of flexibility to stay healthy for years. The program is put together by Secure Horizons and Humana in an effort to promote preventative health care.

Meridian Lions RodeoThe Meridian Lions Rodeo is this weekend. The annual event is a fund raiser for the Meridian Lions Club which in turn uses the money for the Eye bank and for the eye glasses program. The Rodeo is both Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm at the rodeo grounds located off McDermott and Cherry Lane. The cost is $9 per person with seniors and Children only $6.

National Interagency Fire CenterThe Combined Federal Employees Campaign of giving kicks off today. Federal employees give over $571 million each year to charitable organizations both locally and around the world. The group utilizes donated dollars as an instrument to help solve those local needs. In the state of Idaho that means more than a half million dollars will be distributed with about 20% coming from the employees of Mountain Home Air Force Base.

Boise Centre on the GroveThe Women’s Fitness Celebration is ready to go this weekend. The Celebration Women’s Show will help us prepare for the event over the next two days. The show is your opportunity to pickup packets and T-shirts, but it’s also a show where you can shop till you drop. The show is open to everyone, both men and women and is free to attend. The show opens at 10 am each day and closes at 8 pm. In addition you can pick up a special celebration stamp from the postal service at the show.

Shopko Plaza - Fairview and Milwaukee - Noon NewsMoppet Togs is a children’s consignment sale. Families have brought in their gently used items of clothing and toys for re-sale. The event will start Thursday and run through Saturday 9 am to 7 pm, but the sale will end at 3 pm Saturday. The sale will be at the Shopko Plaza at Fairview and Milwaukee. No more consignments can be taken but donations are welcome. Most items that are not sold will go to military and veterans families in need. For more information you can call 361-2012.

Assistance League of BoiseThe distribution is underway for “Operation School Bell”. It is the annual effort by the Assistance League of Boise to dress children in Ada County for school who have been identified by their schools. If you know of children who need this service they should contact the counselor at the school. The league can always use more donation and volunteers. If you would like to help you need to fill out at application at the Assistance League office.

Timberline High SchoolThe Boise Valley Chordsmen is planning its 50th anniversary show this Friday and Saturday nights. The first show is 7:30 at Timberline High School on Friday and the second is Saturday at Vallivue High School also at 7:30. The cost for either show is $10 for adults and $5 for students with a special family ticket for $25. Tickets will be available at the door for both shows. Blue Lakes Country Club - Twin FallsHabitat for Humanity will be benefiting from the efforts of more than 250 people tomorrow in the annual “Rim to Rim” race in the Twin Falls area. There is still time to sign up for the grueling 7.5 mile race from one side of the Snake River Canyon to the other. There are prizes for the first man and first woman to make it to the top of the rim and overall prizes for the winners of running and walking portions. If you are interested in being involved it will cost you $45 and there will be last minute signup tomorrow morning at 8 am with the race starting at 10 am. Idaho Youth Ranch - Noon NewsThere’s a new thrift store for the Idaho Youth Ranch. The new location is just off Fairview and 5-mile and will help serve a greater portion of town. The location is right near Savers and K-mart and opened yesterday but the grand opening celebration will be on Saturday and will be open 9am to 6pm. This now makes 22 stores in the chain of thrift stores raising funds to help children at the Youth Ranch near Rupert.

Zoo BoiseYou can do things the reptile way this Sunday at Zoo Boise. It’s an opportunity to learn more about lizards and snakes and to learn how reptiles move through their natural environment. In addition to the normal exhibits for the Zoo, members of the Idaho Herpetological Society will bring in their reptiles and will be available to answer questions. The Zoo is open 10 am to 5 pm and normal admission prices will be charged.

Boise State - Noon NewsStudents at Boise State are encouraged to get involved with the community each school year. A volunteer fair was held today at the Student Union Building and 71 agencies were invited to come and present information to students about their organizations and pick up needed help in the form of volunteers or even donations. Last year more than 700 students were moved to do their part and this year the goal is get over 1,000 students to give back to their community.

Idaho CenterIrish Dancers will invade the Idaho Center in Nampa this weekend. The Tiernan Irish Dancers are hosting a competition and will also offer a workshop ahead of time for those interested in trying for the first time. The workshop is Friday with founder Mark Howard, it starts at 4pm and will cost $20 walk-ins are welcome. The competition will be Saturday from 8am to 5pm and is free to the public

Idaho ATA Martial Arts“Kidz’nPower” is a free safety seminar for children age 4-16 at the Idaho ATA Martial Arts and will be held on September 15th and 22nd. The time is 10 am to 1 pm on both days. If you are interested in getting your child into this program you need to call ahead of time to 336-9750. The program emphasizes safety awareness and the danger of strangers and what children can do to protect themselves.

Square and Round Dance CenterThe month of September is National Ballroom Dance Month. The local organizations involved with ball room dance and swing dance will have a series of workshops over the next couple of weeks. The workshops are on Sunday the 16th and the 23rd at 1 pm and you can just show up at the Square and Round Dance center off Victory road. Bronco Shop - BodoIt’s Homecoming week for Boise State football. The Bronco shop at Bodo in downtown Boise has several activities planned throughout the week. This Friday will be Bronco Nation invasion at 7 pm and all of Bodo will be blocked off with music and a pep rally at 8:30 that will feature Coach Chris Peterson and many others. Family activities are planned throughout the evening and it’s free to attend.

Basque BlockA barbeque is planned this afternoon in the Basque Block to benefit the Cenarrusa Foundation. The Foundation was created to help promote the Basque culture and create a Basque studies program at Boise State University. The dinner will feature Lamb with all the fixing and entertainment will go on throughout the evening.

Discovery Center of IdahoA new exhibit will open tomorrow at the Discovery Center of Idaho. DNA is the subject of the exhibit and you can have a hands on approach to learning more about a science that seems to be making news everyday. DNA testing is being used in many different areas of research and crime solving. You can learn a lot more about all of this for the next few months. Public Safety BuildingIf you are interested in a career in Law Enforcement or Public Safety then tomorrow is you chance to find out what it takes. A job fair will be held outside the Public Safety Building off Barrister from 10 am to 3 pm. There is no charge to attend the fair and representatives from all the various agencies will be on hand. Information will be available on jobs ranging from police officers to corrections to traffic safety.

Boise State UniversityBoise State University is 75 years old today. It started as a church funded one-room school and has grown to a premiere university with a student population of more than 19,000. Today a time capsule was dug up from 1963 and another was buried for future generations as part of the founder’s day celebration. The growth is expected to continue with increases in academic and athletic programs.

GroveThe 2009 Special Olympic world winter games are coming to Idaho. Tonight at the Grove will be the largest of fund raising events to date with more to come. Several stars will be on hand for the sold out event but everyone is welcome to come down to the Grove and watch the stars as they arrive and greet their fans. It’s a day when select florists give away flowers a dozen at a time and ask us to then give them away to anyone we would like. You can come by a participating florist and get a dozen flowers either roses or carnations. Hillcrest Floral is located in the Hillcrest shopping center at Overland and Orchard. The flowers are available as long as supplies last.

Zoo Boise - News at NoonThe butterfly exhibit is closed at Zoo Boise but the Zoo remains open all year long. There are new programs that start all through the year. One is the African Savannahs which will lead into the “Out of Africa” exhibit. A ground breaking for “Out of Africa” is scheduled for October 3rd. Nampa High SchoolThe Nampa High School Drill Team will host a Dutch Oven Dinner on September 14th at the high school cafeteria. The special dinner will raise funds to buy new uniforms and cover other expenses of the team. The dinner will be from 5 pm to 7 pm and will be right ahead of the cross town rivalry game between Nampa High and Skyview. The cost for the dinner is $10 per person or $30 per family regardless of the size.
