May 2007 ArchivesBogus Creek Ranch“Extra Hands for ALS” will be held at the Bogus Creek Ranch. This is the 3rd year for the event to help raise money for the fight against the disease known better as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The dinner auction will be held on Saturday June 9th and it’s $45 per person. You can call the ranch at 887-7880 to get your tickets in advance.

Capitol Park“Let Freedom Ring” was the theme of a special renovation to the Capitol Park in front of the Idaho Statehouse. Through a grant program a local garden club took on the effort to make improvements to the park and today was the re-dedication of that park. The theme of the work was a tribute to those who serve, whether they are in the military, law enforcement of public service. A plaque in the park says it all with the inscription “Preserve, Protect and Defend.”

Julia Davis Park“Art and Roses” is coming up on Sunday June 3rd at the Rose Garden in Julia Davis Park. The annual event features original art work from local artists and this year over 75 artists will be featured. The show runs from 10am to 6pm and will be just outside the rose garden in the park. A portion of the proceeds go directly back to help with improvements of the garden. There is no charge to attend.

Vallivue High SchoolThe Vallivue Falcons Football program will benefit from the 3rd annual rummage sale this weekend. The sale will start Friday June 1st at 9:00 am in the parking lot of the High School in Caldwell. A classic 1980 Mercedes Benz will be raffled off and tickets are just $2 each but if you buy 50 they are just $1 each. The sale continues into Saturday where members of the football team will be holding a car wash. All the funds raised will help the football program conduct a summer camp and purchase new equipment.

Stagecoach Theatre“Picasso at the Lapin Agile” is the latest production for Stagecoach Theatre. The show will open this week at the theatre in the Hillcrest Shopping Center off Overland and Orchard. The comedy was written by Steve Martin and takes place in France when Picasso and Albert Einstein meet in a bar. The show will run for 3 weeks and you can call the box office at 342-2000 to get tickets in advance.

St. Constantine and HelenThe Greek Food Festival is June 1st and 2nd from 11am to 9pm. This is your chance to enjoy traditional Greek foods prepared in the traditional way. The festival is held each year at St. Constantine and Helen at the intersection of 27th and Bannock. Everyone is welcome and you just buy tokens at the door and exchange them for food and beverage. The funds raised go help run the Sunday school and the Greek Church.

Lake Lowell“Bioblitz 2007” will be held at the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge at Lake Lowell June 8th and 9th. The event is free and everyone is encouraged to attend. Bioblitz is a 24-hour rapid survey of biological diversity. Local scientists, naturalists and volunteers will comb the Deer Flat Refuge to find and identify as many species of plants and animals as possible. You are invited to attend and participate on June 9th from 10am to 3pm and discover all the diversity at Lake Lowell.

Park Center PondFree fishing day is coming June 9th. It’s the one day of the year you can go fishing and don’t need a license. It’s also a great time to introduce children to fishing. The Resource, Conservation and Development Council of Southwest Idaho is sponsoring several events designed to help children learn to love fishing. One of them will be at Park Center Pond. If you want to introduce you children to fishing bring them to one of the events on June 9th and equipment will also be provided. For more information just call 888-1890, ext 113.

Idaho Youth RanchIt’s time for spring cleaning and that means we should be thinking of the Idaho Youth Ranch. If you are preparing for a garage sale, the Youth Ranch can help with the leftovers as long as you give them enough notice. If you decide you just want to get rid of some stuff they can just pick it up for you. You can always make a donation on your own by dropping the items off at the Youth Ranch facility on Irving street known as the Nagel distribution center.

MeridianIt’s the 4th and final day for “Live Tour 2007” and we spent the morning in Meridian at Generations Park. Meridian is the fastest growing city in Idaho and is increasing activities for families at about the same rate. We talked about Movie night in Meridian, which is free movies for families in Settlers Park on Fridays. Dairy Days comes up in June and so does Meridian unplugged which is a series of concerts.

NampaIt’s Armed Forces Day and today in Nampa they are holding Parade America. The special event honors members of the military and reminds all of all of the sacrifices of those military members and their families. The parade is at 11:00 am this morning and will be carried live on 24/7 with hosts Maggie O’Mara and David Gale.

Military History MuseumTomorrow (Saturday) is Armed Forces Day and the Military History Museum is planning a big open house and celebration. The activities will be from 10am to 4pm and it’s free. There will be many static displays of historic and current military equipment along with re-enactors of past conflicts. In addition a special honor will be given to the outstanding citizen soldier in Idaho from the various National Guard units.

Expo IdahoThe 4th annual Kid’s Safety Day is coming to Expo Idaho on June 2nd. The free event is designed to teach safety to children with fun activities. A bike rodeo is planned with members of several organizations like law enforcement and the National Guard doing demonstrations and giving out materials. All types of safety concerns will be covered from water safety to bike helmets to internet safety. The event will run from 10am to 4pm and entry will be through Gate “C” at the fairgrounds.

Zoo BoiseIt’s time for Zoo Daze at Zoo Boise. The Zoo never closes but this is the kickoff for the Zoo season. Special activities are planned for children of all ages with a special appearance of Dora the Explorer. Zoo Daze is this Sunday with normal hours 10am to 5pm and normal Zoo admission. In addition to getting your picture taken with Dora there will also be face painting and Astro jumps.

Eagle FoothillsThe Diabetes Ride is this Sunday. The horse back ride raises funds for Diabetes research and education for patients and their families. If you would like to participate in the ride you need to call 859-7542. You are encouraged to raise as much money as possible in pledges to win prizes or just pay the minimum of $30. If you don’t have a horse you can rent one for the ride by calling 371-2020. The ride will start in the Eagle foothills at 10:00 am .

KetchumIt’s the third installment of “Live Tour 2007”. This morning Maggie and I traveled to Ketchum to learn about several exciting developments and planned events. Savor Sun Valley is a way to savor the flavor of this mountain resort community and it will be coming up June 8-10. Later this month the Sun Valley Wellness Festival will feature Robert Kennedy junior as a keynote speaker. The event will run from the 24th to the 28th. Expansions are planned for the ski area and another 9 holes are being added to the famous Sun Valley golf course.

BSU Caven Williams indoor practice facility“Team Idaho” Lacrosse team is in the midst of raising funds for upcoming travel. The team is comprised of the best players in the state and will be going to Vale, Colorado for National competition. TablerockThe Ada County Paramedics has a Special Operations Team responsible for rescues of victims in difficult situations. It ranges from climbing accidents to vehicles off the road to backcountry rescues. The team practices every month and today they used me as their practice rescue victim. Conditions can vary and the team has to be prepared to retrieve victims as quickly as possible, while always focusing on safety for all.

Main Post OfficeThe annual Letter Carriers Food Drive is this Saturday. Letter Carries all over the valley will be picking up donated food for the Idaho Foodbank. Many of you have probably already received a bag in your mailbox to be used to place non-perishable food items before 9:00 am. Just place the bag next to your mailbox and the carriers will do the rest. This is one of the largest food drives of the year for the Foodbank and it comes at a critical time of the year.

There are several different rides of various lengths so that all can participate. Twin Falls“Live Tour 2007” took us to Twin Falls today. Like many of the growing communities in Idaho, Twin Falls has challenges they are facing to meet the needs of the expanding population. It also means they have more opportunities and with the advancing summer season it means more outdoor events, like the Twin Falls Concert Series. The series is on Wednesdays from June 13th through July 25th. The other music event is the “Jazz in the Canyon”, a three day festival from June 14th to the 16th.

Warhawk Air Museum, NampaIts P-38 days at the Warhawk Air Museum in Nampa. The P-38 is one of the rarest fighter aircraft from World War II that still exist. In fact there are only 3 remaining that are still flying and one of them will be flying over Nampa this weekend. Nicknamed the Lightning, most were destroyed following the war. One of the recovered planes was found and removed from a glacier in Greenland and it was nicknamed the “Glacier Girl”. Bob Cardin headed that project and he will discuss the 10 year recovery. The times are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday and 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Sunday.

WGI PlazaThe annual Motorcycle Safety Awareness ride will be this Saturday. The ride is free and open to all motorcycle riders. The ride starts at 11:00 am at Sandy Point by Lucky Peak and will finish at the WGI Plaza just off Broadway. The ride/parade is a reminder to motorists that this is motorcycle season and we all need to be cautious and courteous of everyone on the roadways.

Boise Centre on the GroveThe Idaho Community Foundation will be holding its 18th annual luncheon on Wednesday, May 16th at the Boise Centre on the Grove. The event is an opportunity to present awards and recognize those who help the Foundation give back to the state through many organizations. The keynote speaker is Dr. Kim Clark the President of BYU-Idaho and former Dean of the Harvard Business School. If you would like a ticket you can contact the Foundation at 342-3535 the cost is $45 per person or you can sponsor a table for $450 or $550.

U.S. BankToday is “Law Day” and that means is “Ask-a-Lawyer” day. You can ask a volunteer Lawyer any legal question you would like for free. It’s a way for the members of the Fourth District Bar Association to give back to the community. The numbers will active all day today and you can call any one of them.
