October 2006 ArchivesLittle Kitchen, NampaThe merchants of downtown Nampa are again sponsoring “Trick or Treat” on downtown streets. A four block area of downtown Nampa will be closed to all traffic this afternoon from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm as the merchants will turnout with treats for the children in costume for Halloween. Everyone across the valley is welcome and a costume contest will be held for the youngsters. There’s no charge to attend but parents are encouraged to monitor their children during the event.

St. Luke's, MeridianThe annual Meridian Wreath Festival will be held next Thursday November 9th at St. Luke’s, Meridian. The event will feature more than 90 decorated wreaths created by volunteers and members of the Meridian Kiwanis Club. The proceeds from the festival will go to the Meridian Kiwanis Youth Foundation and the St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital. The event will be held from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm. There’s no charge to attend the event and it will be held in the main lobby of the hospital.

Lowell Scott Middle SchoolThis is the final day of Red Ribbon week and today we watched as students from Lowell Scott Middle School took part in a special demonstration by the K-9 unit from the Canyon County Sheriff’s Department. The message was how effective these dogs can be if they need to search for drugs or other items even in a large crowd. It helps everyone understand the consequences if they make bad choices when it comes to illegal use of drugs, alcohol or tobacco.

Boise Public LibraryThe Friends of the Boise Public are holding their annual fall sale in the auditorium of the Boise Public Library. The sale opens today at 9:00 am and runs through 7:00 pm. Tomorrow 9:00 am to 5:00 and Sunday Noon to 4:00 pm and everything is half price on Sunday. The funds raised from this sale will go the effort to build future branches around the city, since the measure was passed by the city council.

Sacajawea ElementaryCeltic performers were on hand to entertain the children of Sacajawea Elementary school in the Caldwell area. It’s another part of the Red Ribbon week activities taking place at schools all over the area. The message for the students today was one of staying drug, alcohol and tobacco free will keep the doors open to do the things in life you want. Just like these performer everyone should pledge to be free from temptations.

Zoo BoiseBoo at the Zoo will be held this Saturday at Zoo Boise. The day features costume contests for all ages with different division depending on age and that includes adults. Thousands of pieces of candy will be handed out for children in this wonderful family event for the Halloween season. The Zoo will be open normal hours for the event with normal admission prices. Normal prices are $5.25 for adults age 12 and over, $2.75 for children age 4-11 and children 3 and under along with members of Zoo Boise are free. Hours are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Prospect ElementaryOur travels for Red Ribbon Week took us to Prospect Elementary in the Meridian area. Students throughout the school were asked to decorate their doors in a show of school unity and a pledge to be drug free. A door from the 4th graders and the 5th graders was selected as the best and those students described how they developed their designs to help others learn about the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco and to pledge to never experiment.

Idaho Community FoundationA scholarship fundraiser will be held Thursday night at Ten Thousand Villages in Hyde Park from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A portion of the sales from the event will go directly to a scholarship for the Turn Around Kids. The students in the program have come from an “at risk” environment and have already made changes in their lives with good grades and now want to attend college. Money from the effort will be administered through the non profit Idaho Community Foundation. Donations can also be given directly through the Community Foundation. Kuna Middle SchoolRed Ribbon week continues with a trip to Kuna Middle School at noon today. Students have been involved with a special training in kindness and respect. The respect involves each other, and themselves. When respect is given to others it becomes positive peer pressure and encourages everyone to respect themselves and stay free from the influences of drugs, alcohol or tobacco.

Owyhee Plaza HotelThe Idaho Summit on Hunger and Food Insecurity will be this Friday October 27th at the Owyhee Plaza Hotel. The summit is already filled because of a surprising and large interest in working on hunger state wide. Idaho is the 8th hungriest state in the nation. Individuals from food banks, business, industry, faith based organizations and social agencies will produce the next steps to try and solve the hunger issues in Idaho.

Whitney Elementary SchoolThis is Red Ribbon week and we spent the afternoon at Whitney Elementary School where students were learning about the dangers of tobacco. The activities involved a work sheet about tobacco dangers and a fun activity involving tossing a beach ball around with questions. Where the ball lands a student reads the question out loud and gives an answer that all students can learn from and discuss.

Caldwell Train DepotThe Caldwell train depot will celebrate its centennial this weekend. The Friends of the Caldwell depot have spent the year doing a complete restoration of the building and it will now become an event center and will be a full time interpretive center for Caldwell. Everyone is welcome to attend Saturday’s event from 2 pm to 5 pm where a special ribbon cutting will officially reopen the building. There is no charge to attend, but fundraising continues through sale of items through the Friends of the Caldwell depot.

Idaho StatehouseRed Ribbon week kicked off this afternoon at the Idaho Statehouse as children from around valley pledge to remain drug free. All next week children will be involved in special projects through their schools and helping each other to remain free from alcohol and drugs. We will be featuring some of the many projects during the News at Noon all next week.

Bogus Basin OfficeThe annual snow blast and dance will be held on Saturday October 28th from 12 pm to 4 pm at the downtown Bogus Basin office off Bogus Basin road. This is a kick off to the season and a chance to learn all about Bogus Basin. The various clubs and groups who are a part of the ski resort will be on hand including the ski racing club. A local band will provide music and the event is free. Area businesses will have specials for food and drink and other concessions will be available for sale. In addition Bogus Basin will conduct a job fair to hire between 400-500 seasonal workers. A job form is available on the Bogus web site.

Country SquareFaith in Action will be conducting their annual white elephant sale at the Country Square. The shopping center is on the corner of Overland and 5-mile. Thousands of items have been donated and will be offered for sale and silent auction. A preview party will kick things off Friday night. It is open to everyone but you must get tickets at the door for $35 per person or $50 per couple. There’s no admission charge for the rest of the sale on Saturday 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 10 am to 3 pm. All funds from the sale will go to Faith in Action for their work in keeping frail seniors in their own homes.

Christmas Card HouseChristmas cards are ready for sale to help benefit St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital. This is the 50th year for the sale of cards with seven new designs picked by a team for the holiday season. KTVB StudioUnfortunately sometimes equipment will fail and we had a failure in an important part or our live equipment, which meant we spent the morning in the studio. We should have spent the morning with Starlight Mountain Theatre. The group is ready to open its latest production, “Anne of Green Gables” at Capital High School. The show opens Friday the 20th of October and Saturday the 21st with two shows at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Then the show moves to the Nampa Civic Center on November 3rd and 4th both at 8:00 pm. Borah High SchoolToday is Peanut Butter and Jelly day at Borah High School. Students are asking their fellow students to bring in donations of peanut butter and jelly, but everyone can help as well. Albertsons stores will have collection barrels all over the valley this Saturday. Elementary schools in the Boise district are also participating with collections going on all week. A rally will also be held on the Statehouse steps at noon where students will share what they have learned about hunger. All the donations will go to the Idaho Food Bank for distribution.

Esther Simplot Academy Annex“Carmina Burana” is the latest ballet for Ballet Idaho. There is one performance only on Saturday October 21st at the Morrison Center. Tickets range in price from $18 to $43. The Boise Master Chorale and Boise State Orchestra will provide the music for this ballet by Artistic Director Toni Pimble. "Still Falls the Rain" will precede "Carmina Burana" and is about events in 1996 Afghanistan. Tickets can be purchased in advance through Select-a-Seat. KTVB StudioA photographer illness left us shorthanded today so our live location plans had to be cancelled this morning. The original plan would have taken us to Expo Idaho (Western Idaho Fairgrounds) for the Treasure Valley Dog Show. The show starts today and runs for 4 days from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. More than 1500 dogs have come in from all over the region for the annual competition. The shows are open to the public at $2.00 per person or $5.00 for the entire family. Only dogs entered in the show are allowed so leave your pets at home.

Nampa Civic Center“Peter Pan” is the latest production for Music Theatre Idaho and will open this weekend. A limited number of tickets are available but sell outs for all shows are expected. You can get tickets by calling the box office 468-2385 or by going on line. In addition to the shows character breakfasts will be held on the next 2 Saturdays, but you must get you r tickets in advance and they can only be purchased through the box office number.

Nampa Civic CenterThe Nampa Art Guild will be holding their Centennial 21 Juried Art Show at the Nampa Civic Center. The show is free and open to the public and starts today Tuesday and runs through next Tuesday October 17th. The artwork is all original and is all for sale. It features a variety of styles and includes sculptures. The show was juried by James Blankenship the Boise State Art Professor Emeritus and includes 95 pieces. The show is open from 10 am to 7 pm and until 9pm on Friday and Saturday. Sunday 9am to 3pm.

KandorCookies and Dreams is a special event for the Girl Scouts. It’s a competition among area chefs to create unique and special desserts using Girl Scouts cookies. The event will be held at the Boise Art Museum on October 27th from 7 pm to 10 pm. The cost per person is $50 and tickets can be purchased at either location for Kandor, Boise or Eagle and by calling the Girl Scout office at 377-2011.

Oregon Trail Church of GodThe Oregon Trail Church of God will host their annual Barbeque and auction on Saturday October 7th. The viewing for the auction will start at about 12 noon but the dinner and live auction will start about 4:30. The proceeds from the event go to the continuing expansion of he church. The dinner is a deep pit barbeque featuring pork and lamb with all the trimmings. The auction features hand made quilts, specialty items and some antique collectable items.

Stagecoach Theatre“The Gazebo” is the latest production for Stagecoach Theatre and it will open this Friday. The comedy is from the 1950’s and is about a man who writes murder mystery shows for television and finds himself in a position to need a plan to commit murder but it doesn’t go according to plan. To get tickets just call the box office at 342-2000. To find the theatre go to the Hillcrest Shopping Center and look for the covered portion. The Shopping Center is located at the intersection of Overland and Orchard.
