September 2006 ArchivesCapitol ParkThe Light the Night Walk is coming October 5th from Capitol Park. The annual event raised funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Everyone is welcome to participate in t he event which begins at 7:00 and is non competitive. Participants are encouraged to raise as much money as possible but a minimum of $25 is requested. Julia Davis ParkSee Spot Walk is the annual fundraiser for the Idaho Humane Society and will be held on October 7th at Julia Davis Park. Dog owners and their pets are encouraged to sign up at any ZamZows location or the Humane Society. The cost to walk is $20 per person, if you are in a team of 4 or more its $18 per persona and children 12 and under are $12. All the proceeds go to the Humane Society to help care for the more than 15,000 animals served each year. For more information you can call 387-2760 or you can register on line.

Mountian View AuditoriumNew Heritage Theatre Company’s latest production is the classic “Our Town”. The Thornton Wilder play will leave you wanting to hug you children and appreciate your family a little more. The professional theatre company produces their shows at Mountain View Auditorium. The show opens October 6th and will run through October 15th. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 381-0958 or you can get them on line.

Assistance League of BoiseOperation School Bell is a program from the Assistance League to outfit needy children in Ada County with clothing for the school year. The clothing is new items because that’s important to every child. The children are identified by the public schools and are referred to the league for help. Donations can be made to the league in the form of cash, time, services or donations to the thrift store for sale by calling 377-4327. Important to note the thrift store proceeds help with several projects done by the league. Operation School Bell is only one of those efforts.

Caldwell Senior CenterThe 26th annual Doll show will be held at the Caldwell Senior Center the first weekend in October. It’s on Saturday October 7th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and it will cost you $2.00. The proceeds of the show will benefit various charitable groups in the area. The dolls range from old to new from repair to rare. If you like dolls then this is your show and its one day only.

Boise Centre on the GroveThe St. Luke’s Women’s Celebration shopping show will open again today for participants in the Women’s Fitness Celebration. The show opens at 10:00 am and will run through 8:00 pm this evening. More than 150 vendors will be on hand for everyone to shop the show and sample. This is where you pick up your packet if you pre-registered and if you haven’t you can still get signed up. This year we could become the largest all women’s event in the country.

Cherry Land and McDermottThe 17th annual Meridian Lions Rodeo will be held this weekend at the rodeo grounds off the intersection of Cherry Lane and McDermott road in the Meridian area. The rodeo features competitors of all ages and is a fundraiser for the Meridian Lions Club and their continuing efforts to continue the work on Eye Banks and research to help prevent blindness. Tickets are available at the gate for $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for Children and seniors.

Boise Centre on the GroveThe Boise Centre on the Grove will host the annual “Serving up Wishes” on Monday October 9th. The event is a special fundraiser for the Make-a-Wish organization of Idaho. Athletes from Boise State University will be serving those who attend and trying to gather additional tips to raise more money to grant the wishes for the children they have selected. The dinner will feature salmon and steak and will cost $100 per person. You can get your tickets in advance by calling the Make-a-Wish office at 345-9474 (wish).

Highway 21The Robie Creek Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting their annual fundraising event at station number 2 in Idaho City. The station is located right off highway 21 at mile marker 21. The event features food, fun and an auction. Everything gets started at 11:00 am with the auction at 2:00 pm and music by Pinto Bennett and his group at 4:00 pm. Plan to head to Idaho City tomorrow and spend the day. The funds go to help with the normal operating expenses as there is no tax base support for the fire department.

Zoo BoiseZoo Boise will host enrichment day where you can come and play the animal way. This is an opportunity to see behind the scenes on how the animals are cared for and learn how to care for your own animals better. There will be hands on activities all day for the children with special talks by the keepers. In addition a sympathy card for Animal Activist Steve Irwin will be available to sign and it will be sent to the Australian Zoo. Regular hours and admission will be charged.

Blue Lakes Country Club, Twin FallsThe 20th annual Rim to Rim race will be held this Saturday morning in the Twin Falls area. The 7.5 mile race starts and finishes at Bass Lake on the Blue Lakes Country Club golf course. The competitive race goes up the canyon and across the Perrine Bridge and then back again. Last minute registration will be held at the Friday night Feast and Fest and Saturday morning at 8:30 at Bass Lake. You can also register on line.

Ann Morrison ParkAnn Morrison Park is the location for a special walk to raise funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Everyone can participate in the walk which will be held in association with a car show involving the Treasure Valley Corvette Club and several other groups. The children with Juvenile Diabetes will actually be the judges of the car show giving away plaques with their photos to the winners. Meridian Police DepartmentBack to school night tomorrow night in the Meridian District will offer something different for parents. Free drug testing kits will be given away to each family with students in the Middle schools. The kits are to educate parents and help open a dialog with their children about drugs and alcohol. Information will also be given to parents on how to have conversations with their children. This is all part of a program called “Not my Kid.” You can get more information from the organizations web site.

Julia Davis ParkThe annual Art in the Park show and sale kicked off today and will run through the weekend. The fundraising event supports the Boise Art Museum and showcases artists from the local and surrounding areas. Art work for the show is juried months in advance with selections made to suit everyone’s tastes. In addition to the arts and crafts vendors’ food and special drinks are also available.

Warhawk Air Museum, NampaThe Idaho British Car Club will have a special display of their cars on Saturday at the Warhawk Air Museum in Nampa, September 9th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. The events will help commemorate the Battle of Britain a pivotal point in World War II history. More than 30 cars from Britain will be on display with a presentation about the Battle of Britain and its significance to the end of the war. There will also be an A-10 fly over at about 1:00 pm. The Warhawk Air Museum is located adjacent to the Nampa Airport.

Bronco StadiumBoise State will host Oregon State tonight in football at Bronco Stadium. It’s the 20th anniversary of the famous blue smurf turf. Several members of that first team to play on the blue will be honored tonight. Those same members joined us this morning to talk about the alumni “B” organization. The former athletes from Boise State are joining forces to help support Boise State and the community through their alumni organization. Tonight’s game is scheduled for 5:30 kickoff and will be live on ESPN.

Downtown YMCAThe 10th annual Hidden Springs Duathlon will be held September 16th in the Hidden Springs area. The event is a road bike or mountain bike and 5k run. Proceeds from the event helps provide scholarships for children at the YMCA. Idaho State Police HeadquartersA public safety job fair will be held this weekend at the parking lot of Idaho State Police in Meridian. If you are interested in a career in public safety from police to sheriff’s departments to paramedics, firefighting, or corrections this is your opportunity. The job fair will be held from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Saturday only and a similar one will be held in the Magic Valley at the job service in Twin Falls right behind the College of Southern Idaho and the hours are the same.

Nampa High SchoolThe Nampa High School Drill Team will hold a Dutch oven event on Friday September 15th at the High School cafeteria. It’s a fundraiser for the team to purchase new uniforms and other accessories. The costs are $10 per person or $30 per family regardless of the size of your family. Food will be served from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on the 15th and it will be followed by the Nampa High School and Bishop Kelly High School football game.

Ada County Juvenile Court ServicesThe “Scales of Justice” Bass Fishing tournament will be held on Sunday September 10th at the C.J. Strike reservoir. The tourney was started by an idea of Judge John Vehlow when out of frustration years ago in his juvenile court told a young offender, if he could stay straight and get off probation, he would take him fishing. It worked and the young man got off probation and now through this tournament many other juvenile offenders are being helped.
