April 2006 ArchivesBoise Centre on the GroveThe Beaux Arts Society will host the annual Wine Festival tonight and tomorrow night at the Boise Centre on the Grove. Each night the action will start at 5:30 pm and tickets are still available. Tonight will feature more wine tasting and an opportunity to learn about wines with more than 250 wineries at the event. Tomorrow night the action changes to a Gala dinner and auction. All the money raised goes to the Boise Art Museum for ongoing costs of operation and for bringing in special exhibitions for the next year. Tickets will be available at the door tonight but for tomorrow night you should call the Art Museum 345-8330, extension 26 and ask for Michelle.

Nampa Civic CenterThe annual Mrs. Idaho pageant will be held this Saturday night at the Nampa Civic Center. The event is already a sell out so no tickets are available. There are 21 contestants this year who will vie for the title of Mrs. Idaho and then try for the Mrs. America title. The entrants range in age from 22 to 60 and will compete in interviews, modeling and personality. The current Mrs. Idaho Juliet Tigen will be giving up her crown at the end of Saturday’s competition.

Home DepotArbor Day is Friday. Seedling trees will be given away on Friday at all the Home Depot locations in the area as well as Kinko Copy spots. Packets of seeds will also be distributed for those who would like to try and grow a Douglas Fir tree from the seed. Arbor Day was first started in 1871 in Nebraska in an effort to replant the forests and add trees to the landscape of America. The program lives on from generation to generation as a learning experience for children and fun for the whole family. Trees and seeds will only be available on Friday.

Veterans Memorial ParkThe annual MS 150 bike tour is coming in June, on the 3rd and 4th. The non-competitive ride raises money for the MS Society of Idaho. Practice rides are being planned now and anyone with a bike is encouraged to join. While the event is called the 150 tour it actually has several different lengths. There are shorter distances for those who prefer and longer ones for others. The entire family is welcome minimum donations required and prizes for who ever raises the most money for the charitable cause. Meridian Middle SchoolThis week, April 23 – 29 is national volunteer week. The Americorp volunteers are reminding all of us about the benefits we feel when we pitch in and help. Today we were with a group of students from Meridian Middle School who spent last Friday night in Story Park in Meridian in cardboard boxes to experience life as a homeless person. Since that time the students have been able to raise more than $100,000 for Habitat for Humanity and several hundred pounds of food for the Meridian Food Bank plus donations of clothing for the needy. Idaho Horse ParkThe 20th annual Horse Expo kicks off today (Friday) at the Idaho Horse Park in Nampa. The equine event has something for every horse lover and at all levels of interest and experience. The three-day activities will include clinics, demonstrations, and educational workshops. The price for admission is $10.00 per day with discounts offered for children and seniors. The Idaho Horse Park is located just west of the Idaho Center in the Nampa area just off the Interstate 84 and Garrity exit.

Boise State UniversityBoise State University will be hosting the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Championships. The Women started their action this morning with the men starting tomorrow. There is a $6.00 per day charge to watch the action, which will take place at the Appleton Tennis Center on the campus of Boise State. Matches will continue through the weekend with the finals being held on Sunday at 11:00 am at center court of the Appleton Tennis Center.

Lions Club of EagleThe Lion’s club of Eagle is collecting donations for prevention and cure of “River Blindness”. The disease is very treatable but those who are afflicted with it don’t have any way to pay for the treatment. River Blindness is caused a fly lands on a person’s face and lays an egg at the corner of their eye. The egg becomes a larva and causes blindness. Third world countries have the highest rate of the problem. This Saturday April 22nd the Lion’s club of Eagle will be at the Albertsons store in Eagle from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. You can make a donation of any size and 100% of the amount you give will go toward the prevention and cure. Albertsons jump-started the fund collection this morning with a check for $1,000.

Franz Witte“Children are our Flowers” is an annual fundraising event for the LCS program. LCS provides an after school program for children called S.T.A.A.R. The program teaches the students about the dangers of drugs and gangs in a positive way and helps guide them from ever getting involved. This weekend, April 21-23 we can help by buying flowers, plants and shrubs from the participating nurseries and florists. A portion of this weekend’s sales goes directly to the LCS program. Look for the poster to make sure you are at a participating business. The green houses are Edwards Greenhouse, Franz Witte, D.G. Nursery, Summer Lawns, Far West, D&B Supply, Horseshoe Nursery, Canyon Lake Gardens, Cloverdale Nursery, Gem Butte Greenhouse, and Greenhurst Nursery. The Floral shops are Carpenters Florists and House of Floral.

Tar Wars“Tar Wars” is a poster art contest for 4th and 5th grade students from across Idaho. Medical professionals through out the state to go various schools and give information to children about the dangers of tobacco products and encourage them to never experiment with any tobacco products. The students are then encouraged to develop posters that show the positive aspects of remaining tobacco free. Contests for the best posters are held at the school level and the winners were judged today for the best in the state and that entry will be sent to Washington D.C. to compete at the National level. The contest is presented by the Idaho Academy of Family Physicians. We spent the morning at St. Lukes, Meridian while a panel of qualified experts judged the entries.

Eagle FloodingFlooding is still an issue along the Boise River. The level of the river is at flood stage and subdivisions on Eagle Island had problems last night. Volunteers along with firefighters, sheriff’s officers and emergency management personal reinforced the banks of the river. The forecast calls for more rain through the Easter weekend and temperatures will be warm today and tomorrow. A cooling trend into next week will help. We spent the morning with Eagle Mayor Nancy Merrill who continues to work with other officials through the valley monitoring the river and protecting private property.

Krispy Kreme DonutsKrispy Kreme donuts is hosting the “Cops on Donut Shops” campaign for the next three days. Boise police officer Tim Beaudwin will be on the top of Krispy Kreme’s until Saturday afternoon. Cory from the “Q Waking Crew” is joining Tim. You can go to the KQFC web site and make a donation on line: http://www.98kqfc.com/ All the money raised through the weekend will be given to Special Olympics Idaho. The furniture being used by Tim and Cory will be sold in an on-line auction. You can also find that on the radio station site. Entertainment is planned throughout the next three days and many give-a-ways. Just go by Krispy Kreme on Fairview and Eagle road to be a part of the fun.

Music Theatre of IdahoMusic Theatre of Idaho presents “Titanic-the musical” at the Nampa Civic Center. This is the tragic story of the Titanic and her passengers and crew. The unsinkable ship sunk in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg on April 14th, which is the same date as the opening of the musical. The show will run for 2 weekends with 3 shows each week for a total of 6. Stagecoach TheatreStagecoach Theatre will open their new production this weekend. “The Trading Post” is a slice of life story about relationships. The main characters are working on a relationship and discover that their respective children are also starting a relationship of their own. The play will run for the next 3 weekends starting Friday night. This week will be Friday and Saturday at 8:15 pm. Next week will be Thursday night at 7:30 pm, then Friday and Saturday at 8:15 and a matinee on Sunday at 2:00 pm. The final week will be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Call the box office at 342-2000 for tickets. Stagecoach Theatre is located in the covered portion of the Hill Crest shopping center off Overland and Orchard.

Idaho Dance TheatreIdaho Dance Theatre is opening their new show on April 20th. It runs for only 4 performances. All 4 will be at the Special Events Center on the campus of Boise State University. Idaho Dance Theatre is a very unique group and we got a sneak preview of the show this morning. The style of dance is eclectic with something for everyone’s taste. The shows run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night at 8:00 pm and Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm. You can get tickets through select-a-seat or for more information you can call the company at 331-9592.

Idaho Tax CommissionTax filing deadline is just around the corner on April 17th. We spent the morning with the Idaho Tax Commission and learned about e-filing or electronic filing. When you e-file your return then it’s the same as entering your information directly into the tax commission’s computer. It’s faster, easier and more efficient. The tax commission will be open for extended hours next week and on Monday April 17th for last minute filers. You can call toll free for help at 800-972-7660. In the Boise area simply dial 334-7660 or you can go online to their web site. You an also file electronically from the web site.

Big EasyThe Junior of Boise will be holding their annual Fashion show on Saturday night at the Big Easy in downtown Boise. It’s the biggest fundraiser of the year for the League, which helps with many community projects all year long. The cost is $35 per person and will feature a fashion show and also a live auction, silent auction and plenty of raffle items. The doors will open at 5:00 pm and everyone is welcome including men. We spend the morning with the Junior League members as they prepared for the show and learned about all the things the group does throughout the year. Tickets may be available at the door but you should call the league office at 424-5011 to get them ahead of time as they could sell out.

Caldwell OptimistsThe Caldwell Optimist Club will hold its annual Casino Night on Saturday April 8th at the Elks lodge in Caldwell. The evening will feature a silent auction, door prizes, raffles and casino type games including a Texas Hold-‘em tournament. Tickets are $15 each or $25 per couple and can be purchased in advance at Curt & Hal in Caldwell or the U.S. Bank on Cleveland Boulevard in Caldwell. The money raised will go to help with youth projects in the Canyon County area such as Soccer and Oratory contests. The event will start at 7:00 pm at the Elk’s Lodge on Kimball and 10th avenue in Caldwell. Call 454-1870 for more information and don’t forget to ask for the bad joke of the day.

St. Lukes, MeridianApril is Child Abuse Prevention awareness month. We spent the morning with experts in the field of child abuse prevention and learned about signs of abuse and things that can be done if abuse is suspected. April 29th a free event will be held at the Discovery Center of Idaho for children and adults. Information and answers will be available for the adults while the children get a chance to enjoy the Discovery Center (Children’s Science Museum) for themselves. If you have questions or want immediate help with child abuse prevention you can call the care line at 2-1-1.

Debt Reduction ServicesApril is financial literacy month. We spent the morning at Debt Reduction Services a non-profit organization that helps people handle their finances. They offer free classes to anyone interested on Tuesday nights at 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. There are no charges for the classes and they are open to anyone, you just need to call ahead to reserve a spot.
