Should LeGarrette Blount be reinstated?

It was the PUNCH felt around the country... and it happened right here at Bronco Stadium. Oregon's running back LeGarrette Blount punched BSU's Byron Hout at the end of the game on September 3th. Boise State won 19 to 8. There was some trash talking between the two players, and because of that punch - LeGarrette Blount was suspended from the team for the rest of the season. Hout was punished in house.
Now, we're learning - Blount could be reinstated to the team! Oregon Coach Chip Kelly said today if he meets certain goals - he will allow him to suit up for the Stanford game on November 7th. Kelly said he and Blount reached a written agreement on Friday, September 25th. He must meet strict academic and behavioral guidelines to come back. Kelly said that may or may NOT happen. It's up to Blount.

Yesterday, the Oregon Daily Emerald (the student newspaper on campus) published an apology letter from Blount, here it is:
Courtesy: Oregon Daily Emerald
Though the incident at Boise State happened before the start of classes, there probably are few members of our University community who are unaware of the images and media reports of my regrettable actions following the Oregon-Boise State football game. There is no justification for my behavior -- not the "heat of the moment," not the "agony of defeat," and definitely not anything said or done by an opponent.
Being a student-athlete at the University of Oregon should be about being a good student working to positively represent the University and its football program under coach Chip Kelly, and handling both victories and defeats with sportsmanship, class, and character. That night, I used poor judgment and lost self-control. My actions reflected poorly upon my teammates, our football program, and our University. And for this, I offer my sincerest apologies and heartfelt regrets.
On a personal note, I probably will never be able to erase the memories of the post-game events of that day. Given this, I do not expect to be given a second chance to be a positive and responsible member of the football program and of this community. Going forward, what I hope for is the opportunity to show that I am able to earn a second chance as a University student. And if I am so fortunate, I believe that I also will demonstrate that I am a better man and a better human being for having lived through this unfortunate experience.
Sincerely,
LeGarrette Blount
What do you think?
Should he be allowed back on the team?
No way!
He should be be expelled from school, kicked off the team, and banned from collegiate sports.
I think he should not be able to play. Let's not show our young impressionable kids that it is ok to act out, then write an apology, and then be forgiven.
Blount should have been kicked off the team, lost his scholarship and banned from NCAA sports. This wasn't the first time he caused problems. He appears to have serious anger issues.
No!!!
If he is reinstated you are saying You can act out and then say your sorry a couple of times then it is okay! I don't believe he is sorry! He has acted out more than once or twice with bad behavior!! He needs to know what behavior is not expectable!!!
You know, some times when staring down a complete screw up in life, you change. It gives you a new perspective. If he is following the guidance of his coach, and his coach thinks he is able to function properly, I think he should be eligible to be reinstated, at a later time. I DO think a minimum of a half-season of bench time, though.
I think there is a chance he has been able to learn from this. If he has, it can be a win-win situation. But, he will have to be watched closely. I can't tell, from reading newspaper articles, if Blount is really sorry. That is what his coach is for.
He already lost his shot at the pros, at least let him play out the last part of a season, in a game he has dedicated his life to.
No Way! What are we teaching our youth. He choose to make a stupid mistake and now he must pay the price. This is not a one time occurance with Blount, he is a repeat offender. I am sick and tired or athletes/entertainers thinking that they are above the law. There are plenty of others that can play just as well that are worthy of the chance/opportunity to play.
I believe a person is worth saving if he/she complies with the restrictions set forth. I don't think he should come back this early though. The kids, players, college and pro's know actions such as this is a negative representation of the sport.
Good luck Blunt. But always remember where you were and where you are now, and what you can be in the future. This is your chance, do not waste it..
I welcome you back as a player and a person whom can produce in the future as a pro player.
No he should not be reinstated!!! He should have been arrested that night and prosecuted for assault. It is ridiculous that these football players get away with breaking the law. He's getting away with it so he will do it again. They will reinstate him because he is a star player. Don't even get me started on Gilligan and Michael Vick.
No way!!! I think he should have been put in JAIL to begin with.
If you are given this chance and you mess it up again, you will never be able to show your face in football again. You want to ruin a contract of most likely 20 million dollars to go flip burgers, be an embarrassment to yourself and your family? The next time, oops, there won't be a next time, it will be over, finished, kaput, done, cooked.
Good luck to you Blount, you will need it.
I say no! There are so many young children watching these games. When they see someone punished for there actions and then have that punishment taken away what are they learning? That it's ok to act out. That they won't be held responsible for their own actions. Saying sorry is only a part of it. You have to show through your actions as well that you are sorry and WONT do it again.
ABSOLUTELY NOT! He needs to be punished, and that punishment needs to be fulfilled. I'm with Nikki - sick of athletes thinking that they are above the law and they can get away with anything because they can throw a football or hit a baseball. Had I hit someone like he did, I would still be sitting in jail. Blount needs to realize that his actions have consequences!
I think the first thing we have to remember is that these are young men. There is a reason why rental car companies won't even let you drive one of their vehicles until your at least 25. Young men do not always make the best decisions. After having seen the ESPN footage repeatedly as many others have, it seemed to me that Blount was exceedingly frustrated with the situation and not just on a mindless rampage.
If he is truly sorry for his actions, and has taken steps to becoming a better person then I feel that perhaps being allowed to play again, at some point, should be included as part of his healing process. Otherwise, how can he learn to handle life's situations if he is not allowed to be confronted by them?
Remember the apology letter (a complete joke) from the former BSU football player- Cam Hall. We live at this intersection. If his "sentence" was fair, then Blount's apology is excessive.
I think in all fairness Blount should play football.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2332494
"BOISE, Idaho -- A former Boise State University football player has entered a modified guilty plea to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident in which three members of a Boise family died.
Cam Hall, 23, a native of Kennewick, Wash., entered an Alford plea Wednesday in 4th District Court, not directly admitting guilt but conceding a jury would likely convict him for his actions in when Tony and Stephanie Perfect, both 23, and their 5-month-old daughter Zoe died in the crash. In exchange, prosecutors dropped a reckless driving charge.
Hall is requesting a withheld judgment, which would result in removal of the felony from his record if he meets conditions set by a judge (a 3 paragraph apology letter), and Ada County deputy prosecutor Patrick H. Owen said he would support the request.
Absolutely not!!! His actions were criminal in any other setting. He should have been arrested and charged with assault immediately. I applaud the University of Oregon for their initial actions but am embarrassed for them in that they did not immediately remove this individual’s scholarship and dismiss him from their school. I’m all for second chances but I also believe that individuals need to be held totally accountable for their actions. By allowing Blount to continue to play sends the message that the University of Oregon will accept inappropriate behavior by their star athletes and students.
If he had just thrown the punch, I probably wouldn't have much of a problem with this. However, the fact that he just snapped and went after everyone, and it took 4 people to drag him off the field makes me vary wary of letting him back onto the field at all. He's a danger to everyone. Since this was not his first offense, there's a good chance he will do it again.
Of course, being humiliated on the national stage could have humbled him enough to clean up his act.
Yes. He should get to play. I am an alumni of Boise State but I am a solid Oregon Fan. I graduated from Boise State but do not claim their football team because of big egos. Blount should be reinstated because the BSU football team has not proven that they are sportsmanlike. If you don't believe me lets take a look at the last two games in which BSU players have earned themselves 2 (one in each game) penalties for UNSPORTSMANLIKE conduct and should have earned themselves a third (according to ESPN). They were from 2 different players and neither of them were Byron Hout, thats 3 players on BSU's football team that have acted unsportsmanlike. This shows what kind of team Boise State actually is. I hope Coach Peterson is punishing these players "in house" as well. I no way condone what Blount did and his actions are inexcusable but had the punch not been televised on national televison and had it not been replayed several times that night at the game it would not have been such a big deal.
Ha, what a slap in the face to BSU! I would have reinstated him right away after I found out the mules were not going to punish Hout. "What kind of example does it send to our kids"...the same as not punishing Hout for taunting and "touching" another player who is clearly walking past.....You BSU fans are very narrow minded and not the least bit moddest....Your team is NOT the best in the country, you play weak teams and there is clearly some "fishy" stuff going on behind the scenes....
Blunt should have been suspended, several games but not the season.. The Boise State player needed to have some suspension also, maybe one or two games. Twice that for Blunt. The TV clearly shows Boise State started the fight, Peterson was clearly trying to stop the big mouth form yelling at Blunt. Hout needs to also think about his part in very poor sportsmanship!!!!
I could say a lot about this, but since I know that we ALL have done something we regret and wish we could go back and undo. And since we ALL have had to ask for forgiveness for something and hoped we were given a second chance, I'll just say this.
Let him who is without sin, cast the first stone.
I respect Coach Kelly and if he believes his player is worthy of a second chance, I agree with him.
To Shannon:
Thank you....you nailed it on the head! The "in house" punishment is a joke! And BSU FB and the WAC are crooked, they will bend the rules or overlook incendents to get into the big money games!
I am with Nikki and Susan....if any of us had done what he did and were repeat offenders like he is...we would have been prosecuted by law enforcement, not just suspended from a football team. He didn't get kicked out of school or even suspended academically. If he is truly trying to change/learn something from this then let him take the rest of this year to do that, concentrate on that and his school work. Then he can either play next year or enter the draft or whatever. Is it really necessary to teach our young people that this type of behavior is acceptable as long as you apologize whether the apology is sincere or not??
My guess is that most of us wish we could re-write some of the mistakes of our past, many of which were not caught on camera, may be private to only ourselves, and are simply embarrasing to recall. Although we can not re-write our past, many of us are thankful for our second chances, our do-overs, and other opportunities to put the unfourtunate behind us. I suspect that if the two individuals in this case were to meet face to face again, they would take the higher road, forgive, and shake hands. We should do the same and teach others that unsportsmanlike behavior is not tolerable and comes with a cost, often in the public eye.
Let the man play and the best to him and his team.
Byron Hout instigated the punch and he is still on the team...Blount should get to play, as well.
While neither exhibited mindful sportsmanship, let's be fair!
I also think it is in very poor taste for KTVB to continue to stir the pot by posting the provocative photo.
yes he should get to play again, i thought a year
suspension was to long, yes he was out of control
that night, lets give him a chance, you never know
we could have the game of the year come jan with
bsu vs ducks at the rose bowl, go boise state.
The boy should be allowed to play. He made a mistake. He shouldn't have to pay for it for the rest of his life. Hout is still on the team and KTVB and BSU has seriously downplayed the role he played in this.
And yes I go to BSU.
He sounds sincere. He has had his troubles in the past. This is just another one of his ongoing issues. Maybe it’s the University of Oregon sports organization that is saying they need him back to win some games. Either way it’s not up to us to decide. He represents an organization and a community. Those are the ones that get to decide. After reading his letter to the school paper it looks like he has come a long way in his education. But he has yet to apologize to BSU or its team or to Hout. Wouldn't that be the proper thing to do? Not kiss the butts of the people that you have to deal with to play again?
If Oregon is going to let him off so easily, I'm sure it is not to late to file criminal charges in Idaho. Make him show up in our courts and see what he gets away with then.
Let it go!
Not this quickly for sure!!! The Highschooler that hit his coach faced legal charges... what is the difference here???? Double standards? What is Boise saying about Battery on another, it's ok if your a college player? He may be able to change in the future, but with the temper he showed numerous times in just that one night in front of the NATION on ESPN, I think his problem may call for professional long term help from someone more qualified than his coach. If he is reinstated then Boise PD should look into filing charges as justice will not have been served. It's like getting punched all over again!
Let it go! We all have made severe mistakes in our live and most of us have received the second chance we wanted. I don't really believe that in the overall picture it will make any differance in the least. We have only seen one side of the guy and for us to have a life changing opinion about anyone without knowing them personally is way out of line. I was amazed of the lack of action taken by Boise State toward Hout but I believe neither player will ever make the mistake again. If so be severe.
He said his appologies, lets move on. As Boise fans we know who is the better team. Like he said, the memories will always be with him, and you can bet that no one will let him forget this incident. I don't justify what he did was right, but everyone forgot what a great game that was. Lets leave it at that!
From a young age football players are "brainwashed" into a mind set of violence. "Hit them harder!" the coach shouts. "Show no mercy!" Why do you think football players are called "Gladiators of the Gridiron?" Football is a violent sport. After two or more hours of slamming into your opponent play after play we expect these players to instantly shrug off the adrenalin rush this creates and walk off the field a passive human being. It doesn't work that way. After a week of anticipation the emotionally charged game was over and Blount was reacting like many of us would in that situation, he was taunted and struck out at the taunter. Like Pavlov's dog, he was simply reacting to his training. Our society thrives on violence. The most violent of those are given fame and admiration and judged most masculin (Ultimate Fighting Championships anyone?) Why then are we shocked by what happened after this game? There is probably not one of us who has let our anger rule our behavior (bar fights) and many of us have gotten away without any punishment, although some may have been due. We were given a second chance. I think Blount should be allowed to play again. Give him another chance.
We do not know what Hout said or did not say. Blount was making inflammatory remarks before the games and that was reported. It was also a sucker punch as Hout was turning away. Many of the players make comments to each other during games and that is part of the game. Blount was out of control even with his own staff and police. He should be out.
I don't think he should be reinstated. Maybe after he goes through anger management!!!!
The incident happened, public seen it,comments have been made, punishment was handed out, let it go..
What's the matter with the ducks? They must be worried that they need him to win the last few games of their season. He was really wrong for doing what he did and a discrace to NCAA Football. Best of luck the rest of the year duckies??? A die hard BOISE STATE FAN-REMEMBER THAT YOU DUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In a sense I think Hout got what he deserved when he got clocked. BSU did nothing about his poor sportsmanship aside from the internal punishments (extra drills?). He should have been suspended for a couple of games at least. The NFL reinstated Vick. OU can't NOT reinstate Blount. I think being suspended for 3/4 of the seson is fair.
Absolutely not! There are no consequences for his actions which seems to be the way it is in sports these days. (College, pro, whatever.) Who cares if he can play good foot ball?!! So can a ton of other young men out there who can do so respectively.
Hout started the whole thing. If he had kept his mouth to himself Blount wouldn't have thrown the punch "heard around the world." One plus one equals two....Hout should be kicked off the team. So it's OK to antagonize someone into throwing punches and you get to walk away with an in-house reprimand? What's wrong with that picture? You BSU fans need to get a life. No one outside of Boise cares about your football team.
When you compare punishements, and compare the attack and response, its obvious that the punishments on both ends did not fit the action. I'm glad Blount is getting to play again, as he should. The punishment of Hout shows how serious the BSU coach took the entire incident.
Maggie, some advanced education in journalism would be a benefit to you.
BSU fans; the rest of the world is tired of hearing about your football team.
The initial full season suspension was a severe over reaction to the incident. AT THE TIME Coach Kelly SHOULD have initiated an indefinite suspension.
What Blount did was wrong but it wasn't deserving of a season ending suspension. Period. Oregon caved into public sentiment and mob rule. There is nothing AT ALL wrong with reviewing decisions made and altering them if you feel it was not the best one after all. NOTHING wrong with that.
People make mistakes. Blount made a mistake. Kelly made another one by going over board. The adult thing to do is to re-evaluate and make alterations when and as needed. The world needs more adults and fewer people who feel a decision once made is set in stone.
Since the game was technically over, follow the law. Charge him with a misdemeanor of “assault”….He then would then have that on his record for the rest of his life. Also, because of his other behavior issues along with this incident, suspend him for a few games….I think a full year suspension for a senior is too severe of punishment…
I once saw a video where it appeared a high school coach was assaulting a player and the player then struck the coach. The player was subsequently arrested and prosecuted. Ironically, the video of Blount striking Hout was very clear but no prosecution of Blount occurred. Interestingly enough, the high school player walked away after he stopped the coach but Blount lost complete control and had to be dragged all the way off the field and into the locker room by coaches and police officers. Still no arrest, no prosecution, no jail, no criminal record. Crazy world...
I think he should not have been suspended in the first place.Blount is a true player and Hout should not have antagonized him but yet he did so he got laid out like a little school girl just like any other bsu player would have if in the same spot... little girls under those BSU jerzeys!
Yes I do think that he should. He wouldn't be able to come back until after Nov. 7th. As long as he continues to do what the coaches and University ask of him, I believe he should be able to come back. Not only should he be able to come back because it is the right thing to do but I want him back so he can help Oregon win out the rest of the season and help BSU's SOS. Go Broncos!

Only way they should let him play is if the BSU player gets a free shot at his face like he did... end of story
Why was he not charged with assault and battery?
I assume that the evidence of the tape is still avilable, would the Boise PD please provide an explaination.
Looks like I am in the minority but I played division 1 college sports and I say yes let him play and see if the experience has changed him for the better. I bet it has. I also bet the BSU player that was hit doesnt want Blount to sit out the rest of the year. No excuses but it was provoked and instigated. Hopefully the experience shows Blount how to handle adversity from now on and what can happen if you dont.
I cannot believe some of the excuses some of you are making; "he's a Senior", "he was provoked" etc....He is an adult and should be held accountable for his actions. Granted, Hout should have kept his comment to himself but didn't LB provoke the entire BSU football team by "taunting" all over ESPN??? Quit glorifying athletes, make people accountable for their actions. I am trying to raise my children to be responsible citizen to live their lives with integrity and when our community allows people to get away with acts of VIOLENCE it causes confusion for my boys and utter disgust for my husband and myself.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Everyone deserves a chance at redemption. Let him play...sooner than later.
Stop with the excuses; "he's a Senior", "he was provoked"...Didn't he provoke the entire BSU team with his trash talking on ESPN??? Granted Hout should of kept his comments and hand to himself but he was basically repeating LB's words back to him. I am trying to raise my sons to be responsible adults and live their lives with compassion and integrity and when our society fails to hold people responsible for their actions it creates confusion in them and disgust in me. I love football but it is not life...
Reading all of the previous comments - there sure is a mixed bag of emotions. We have reactions ranging from imprisonment to leniency, questioning Blount's inner soul to dredging up old BSU misdeeds. Looking at imprisonment - the H.S. player served his time, got kicked off the team, does have an anger issue, but also got a chance to redeem himself and correct what is wrong in his life. Cam Hall was able to play football again, I am quite sure he will always remember that day and it will torment him for the rest of his life.
I am a BSU fan and I was at the game. Blount's actions were a combination of what happened with Hout, going for fans in the stands and previous blunders he had made in the spring and fall camps. My first reaction to what happened was that Blount should be suspended for at least 3 games. When Coach Kelly laid down a full year suspension, I personally thought it was too long. I believe Coach Kelly has the best interest in mind for Blount and his team. His reinstatement to the team is probably justifies in Kelly's eyes and also the president of the U. of O. I say, let the kid prove himself on and off the field and only time will tell.
We should always forgive our enemies and wish the best for them.
P.S. To Shannon, who brought up the UNSPORTSMAN like conduct calls, every college footbal team has had the penalties called on players this year, the officials are looking more closely at hits this year. Does that make you deem all football teams "BAD"???
I think the thing to remember here that many have seemed to have forgotten is the fact that not only was a punch thrown at Hout but Blount tried to attack a patron in the stands with a bad story about a chair. There are no chairs anywhere near that place so it was a bad story to begin with. I think that having an individual that attacks another player should be suspended for one or two games but when that said player attacks a fan in the crowd and after an officer and the security personnel try to separate the offending player he turns on them. He even turned on his own teammates. Watch the whole video it shows it step by step... This no matter how you stack it, lay it or look at it, it is bad sportsmanship/attitude/respect. This type of action should never be tolerated nor condoned by the school or conference.
Shame on Oregon and the Pack 10 if they allow his return.
Let him play! He didn't get away with anything. His own stupidity was played on on ESPN for everyone to see and God knows how many times its been replayed. He's shown some remorse. Forgive and forget. Let's see what he can do.
Let him play. Was it a mistake...yes, do I condone what he did...no. But these are kids still learning and figuring out themselves. I think it would be a bigger mistake to not let him play or to kick him out of school then it would be to let him come back. I think that he would have a bigger impact on kids playing football, then being kicked off the team.
Absolutely Not!!!!
I am not gonna say yes or not but there are two sides...I think he should be given another chance...everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect. On other hand, he has shown poor role model to the younger kids, I asked some kids that are huge fans of BSU if they saw the punch, they all said yes and that they were not happy about that, I for one was not happy either. that shows poor role model to the younger kids. So maybe the coach should put him in for one more season and if he happen to react in a bad way then yes he should be kicked off for the rest of football seasons. He needs to realize that there is bullying going on and what he did is showing the kids that saw him doing it that punching is ok unless if someone said something mean to you. Punching someone is WRONG for any reasons. He did apologize but he should let the kids know that not to copy him or whatever.
Linn is kind of mixed up. The reason the high school player was charged with a crime for hitting his coach was because he caused serious physical injury. All Blount did was 'ring Hout's bell'. I've been a BSU fan since they were a junior college. I've always thought the full season suspension was rather excessive. If he can prove himself to the coach and Oregon then I believe he deserves a second chance to redeem himself.
His made a choice on the field that night and his consequences for his actions were to lose his "privilege" to play football for the remainder of the season. Why are they even considering bringing him back? whatever happened to integrity and "doing what we say we will do"?
I would give him one more chance, on a very short leash. If he argues with an official, stamps his foot when he disagrees with a call, taunts, ... you show him the door and tell him it's a one-way trip,
When I was in grade school, there was a rule; "you through, you go." I think that, that statement should still apply even in college. Just because Byron Hout (BSU) may or may not have said something do NOT give anyone else the right to sucker punch someone. What should have happened is that if LaGarrette Blount had/has a temper then he should have just been escorted off the field. Should he be alloud back on the field to play again for the Ducks? No, I do not.
I don't think he should be reinstated to play. It is my understanding that this is not his first offence, nor will it be his last unless he learns to control his anger.
I do not think he should be allowed to play in any sport activities. He let his anger get the best of him. Coach Kelly suspended him for the rest of the season. I personally feel that if Kelly lets him back, it makes Kelly look like a fool.
They obviously don't need him to help win games, the game with BSU proves that, BSU won that game, not Oregon.
Blount has a major issue going on here, and it is not just going to go away. He has had other incidents and there will be more in the future.
It was bad enough he sucker punched our player, but to go after the fans, cops, and the security people. Give me a break, he should have been arrested on the spot. If it had been you or I that day that threw the punch, we would have been posting bail. Why is he so special, he is a human just like the rest of us.
Some lesson this is teaching our children. Say you're sorry and then everything goes away. What is that telling our children, the future players in all sports.
Your actions, you should be prepared to pay the consequences. As my mom has always said, "CAUSE AND EFFECT". You caused it, now feel the effects of your actions.
Yes, he should be reinstated. Suspension for the rest of the season was a bit much in our opinion.
Let's face it.... we are all human and we all make mistakes. We also do our best learning from our mistakes. However, I do not believe that Blount should be reinstated. Yes, he is a talented player and he could have a career in football. But he also has some major issues with anger management. He's a senior on this team and with all his experience he should know better! I would hope that Coach Kelly would expect more from his upper class men! They should be positive leaders and role models for their team and for all those watching. I think if this was the first time something like this had happened with Blount, then a short suspension should probably be in order and be considered appropriate. But considering it was reported that Coach Kelly had already had problems with him and his anger earlier in the season, the kid obviously has some issues. What about all the younger impressionable kids out there who were watching? They need to see that this is very serious and not just something that an apology letter will fix. Sometimes there needs to be some sacrificial lambs out there who can send the messages that this is serious business. I do not believe that he should be allowed to continue with this football team in any capacity. I don't necessarily believe he should be kicked out of the university, but he should be finished with the team. Period.
As far as Hout is concerned, I'm sure he trash talked Blount and that was also inappropriate. It is obvious from the tape that Coach Peterson also found this to be inappropriate. But let's remember that all the trash talking was initially started by Blount and this was days before the game even took place. Hout should have kept his mouth shut, but I cannot believe that when two teams such as these play against each other in a much anticipated game, that there is no trash talking involved. Hout should have just had the maturity to not say anything once the game ended. I imagine he has learned a valuable lesson from this.
All my postings have been rejected. What happened to Freedom of Speach?
Not this early if at all. He should have went to jail for that. One with this kind of anger problem needs to be hammered if he has not learned yet. Live and learn if not you land in jail like the general public. How many people outside the stadium or inside would have walked out not in hand cuffs? We treat our highschool anger problems correctly but let the adults walk away with no ramifications? Obsurd!!
Let him play! Did you ever make a mistake when you were 22, and wished that you had another chance?
Absolutley not. He should have been arrested for resisting officers and He should have lost his scholarship. Then see if he still wants to comply and still be a part of the team. I think that this is being treated as no big deal by the coach for one of his star players plus it's fairly obvious that the player has been in 'damage control' ever since he stopped trying to attack the fans after the game.
Just look at all the thugs in the NFL. What is the impact of this on our kids going to be? Will sportmanship still mean anything to them?
Blah, blah, blah.... I am a BSU fan to the bone, but Hout was an idiot that night. Blount was even more stupid to react the way he did. But, in my opinion, the real culprit was the fan who took a swat at Blount. We expect college and pro athletes to restrain themselves when in a hostile environment. Well it's a two way street. I wonder how tough that fan would have been if there was no fence, police or coaches between him and Blount. If anyone should be banned for the year it should be that fan.
I say let him play. Football is a rough sport and boys will be boys. I bet that Hout really didn't need Coach Pete's "in-house" punishment. Being dropped on national TV is embarrassing enough.
I have read all these again. I still don’t understand what some people think. He did something to humiliate his organization, community, state and himself. Why do we keep saying poor Blout? He was suspended from playing football! Not from the school. Are we saying that he is only good at football? He is going to a great school for FREE!!! How many other can say that? He MAY become a NFL star. Honestly, what are the chances of that? How many other better players hope and dream of being in the NFL? Charter says a lot of someone. Chip Kelly spoke and said that he (Blout) was out for the season. What changed his mind? The need to win more games? Pressure from the team? Does it really matter? Chip Kelly will lose credibility once he allows him to return. Everyone that keeps saying give him another chance needs to look at Bloat’s past. This IS his second chance!!! And this is what he did with it. How many times do we need to give second chances before we figure out what we are doing wrong?
Next Level,
How can you say “I bet it has changed him for the better.”? Have you researched his past? This is not the first offense he has done. When will it change him?
Clint,
Let him come back and prove himself? He tried. He failed. He is still in school. THAT is his last chance. He gets an education to prove himself. Football is not life and that is how he can show the kids what it means to get a second chance. Education is what he is getting by not playing. What will he be doing when he doesn’t make it into the NFL?
John,
“All Blount did was 'ring Hout's bell'.” How about someone “rings” your bell? You would run to the nearest officer and then straight to your attorney’s office!
And for all those that are on the side of him being a senior. Look at his past; he has gotten more chances then most. When will it end? Keep letting have a second chances. My son learns from me about second chances. It is what is called, second chances, not third, fourth or fifth. Stop making excuses for our kids and let’s make them accountable for their actions, on and off the field!
No, he should not be allowed to play football again this year, nor next year, not for the rest of his life. From what I read he has a history of this type of behavior, and apparently he hasn't learned from any of his mistakes. He's a loaded cannon. And cannon's go off again and again. Some say he has atoned for his mistakes, NO HE HASN'T.
Coach Kelly is a class act for a coach, if he has sat the rules for Blount's return, and Blount meets that criteria, then yes he should be given a second chance. You learn from what you do wrong more than what you did right, and I do believe he, Blount, has learned under Coach Kelly's tutaledge!
As far as Hout goes, he probably wishes he was suspended after the in house punishment Coach Peterson gave him. Don't think he got away with anything! I put money on stairs and stadium!
So my vote is to let Blount play; Go Ducks you only make us (BSU) look better by winning!
BSU to the top of the BCS!
Its a game, and emotions run high, especially with a crowd screaming out anything from encouragment to obscenities. Let him play. I'm a little suprised that people actually think these guys are somehow 'moral' leaders. These guys are human above all else and are right in the middle of an adreneline rush. Besides, being from Boise, I'm really tired of all the BSU hype. It's a little tiresome for college ball.
Let him play, we all make a mistake in life now and than, forgive and forget, move on BSU, get over it!!!
Are you kidding me??? He was basically given a sentence of not being able to play. He is lucky that criminal charges were not brought against him. The decision to bring him back is totally wrong, if they do that then what message are they sending to our children? That it is ok to display unacceptable behavior without full consequences?
the decision is totally wrong
No he should not be reinstated. The punishment was suspension, not possible reinstatement if he was on his best behavior. Criminal charges should have been filed. Anger issues like he has cannot be corrected that quickly. Leave him suspended!
Hey Tom
Since you want to talk about taunting and Hout got what he deserved, you seem to forget whom was doing all the mouthing off and taunting before the game. Sounds to me like Blount can dish it out but doesn't have the skills to take it. I say leave him benched. And to anyone else that seems to think we play only weak teams, Oklahoma anyone???
I work in a field that gives offenders the opportunity for positive change. We expect our clients to have the will to make positive changes in their lives so that they can be productive members of society.
I know that most of these offenders were watching or have seen the footage of this incident. I think that the concerns of many about impressionable youth receiving the message that it is alright to strike out like Blount did that night and apologize for it and all to be OK is the wrong message to send out.
If Coach Kelly feels that Blunt can change and is truly sorry for his actions and has learned form his mistake then he should be allowed play for his school and team.
That being said, if he is allowed to return to the field, then it is my firm belief that appropriate criminal charges should be filed either by BSU or the Boise Police for his actions that night; assault, battery, resisting arrest, assault again for the tussle with the fans. Do not think I am biased just against Oregon, Hout should be charged with assault as well for the things that he said that caused the reaction form Blount.
Blount's history of aggression and anger management over the last couple of years are proof that he has not learned from his lessons and I would be questioning if he has learned his lesson this time as well. Apologies are nice when written down and you have had time to think about what you want to say, or if you just had a PR person/ speech writer put pen to paper for you. I think that if given the choice of not playing for the rest of the season and it affects his possible NFL draft that might be a better tool for a lesson learned, or taking the punishment in the court room and possibility of jail time hear in Ada County jail for his crime. Who knows the criminal record just might help out his free agent bid into the NFL, just look at the examples that he has had to grow up with over the years. We can see in Blount how the criminal element in the NFL influences the youth in sports.
I really don't care if Blount is reinstated. I do however believe that for the Ducks, his reinstatement is a terrible mistake. Blount is NOT a asset to the team. Just look at what the team has done without him. They have convinced me that he is just unwanted baggage. By letting him back on the team, they are forceing a quality young teammate with potential off due to the maximum number of players limitation. Blount needs to look to the future doing something other than football, as he has ruined his reputation in football. NO reputable, respectable, and quality professional football organization will even consider an unstable player like him on their team. The potential liablity is just too great. So I guess that just leaves the Oakland Raiders and Tom Cable as his only possibility of a future in the pros. If he comes back, all of the teams Oregon plays in the future needs to learn to keep their helmets on so it hurt so bad when he hits you.
Absolutely not!
Why wasn't he charged with assault?
The decision is ONLY between him, his coach and his team-mates!
Both guys were at fault. Anyone could see the guy was taking the game hard. BSU taunted him, including the fans! The media did not help any, shame on them!
