Terrible Towel!

8:12 AM Thu, Jan 29, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

250px-Terrible_Towel_2006.jpg

So, on the show this morning, you may have seen that my co-anchor Doug dressed me up in two Steeler jerseys... a hat, a Steelers "cozy" or "coozee" to put a frosty adult beverage in... and last but not least he handed me a TERRIBLE TOWEL. He even taught we how to twirl it around like a die hard fan!

Maggie Steelers.jpg

The good thing is... the man I married, my Dallas Cowboys "super fan" was at home asleep - and didn't see it! I hope. As far as I know - I haven't been tossed out of the house yet! :) But, since he loves Dallas and has since he was a little boy, I have been told WE'RE cheering for Arizona. (Why can't we all just get along?)

Super Bowl.jpg

The Superbowl is this Sunday afternoon here on KTVB. We have a ton of coverage coming up that day... you may as well just plant yourself in front of your mega-screen in the morning with all the snacks you can muster up - and just stay there. I know Doug and Larry (also a ginormous Steelers fan) plan on it! Look at this lineup:

Super Coverage.png

Tomorrow, there won't be a new "Behind the Scenes" blog entry. I'm taking the day off to head to McCall for Winter Carnival.... maybe I'll see you there! It's always a lot of fun...

winter-carnival-logo.gif

If you haven't been, you should check it out. The ice sculptures are amazing!

Have a great weekend! I'll be back Monday.

Just a skiff...

7:45 AM Wed, Jan 28, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

So the snow fell, but Larry says it was just a skiff. I have to say, I was happy to see that we weren't pelted with snow overnight! I was not looking forward to trudging through it today. Is that bad? Not slipping and sliding in our KTVB parking lot on snow and ice is always a plus! I've taken a spill several times out there, and wouldn't you know - someone is always there to watch me, and laugh at me too. It's character building... :)

Today - we had some members of the Boise Fire Department in the studio to talk about the 2009 Burnout Fund Calendar. They always bring me my own copy! Here are the 2009 cover models from BFD:

Firefighter Calendars.jpg

Each month features a different studly firefighter - something tells me my husband won't appreciate me hanging it on our fridge. I may have to give my copy to the single girls here in the office!?

Firefighter 1.jpg

But - you can get your own copy for $10, and all the money goes to a great cause. The Burnout Fund helps families who are displaced by house fires... For questions about upcoming calendar signing locations (you can see these guys in person) or the Boise Burn Out Fund, please contact Charlie Ruffing at 590-1437.

This morning... we had a lot of discussion behind the scenes about the upcoming Superbowl! Larry and Doug are HUGE Steeler fans... so since I'm neutral (or so I thought!) I decided I would side with them (for the sake of a friendly work environment) and cheer for the Steelers. Go Steelers! Right? Right!

Steelers Logo.gif

Wrong. My better half caught wind of this - and apparently I learned that at our house - we're major Dallas Cowboy "Fans". So apparently, I am not "allowed" to cheer for the Steelers. (Big rivalry there, I guess? You see how much I know about pro-football) Anyhoo, I am now hoping the Cardinals win. Or so I am told! For the sake of a happy marriage, I am going against Larry and Doug. Sorry guys! Go Cardinals!

Cardinals.jpg

Either way, come Monday - I'm going to have to deal with someone (Larry and Doug, or my hubby!) who will be depressed. Someone has to lose! Don't forget you can watch the Superbowl right here on NBC on this Sunday afternoon... :)

11 degrees?

7:49 AM Tue, Jan 27, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

Today - during the morning news, we were constantly reminding people that it was 11 degrees outside. Larry says with the windchill, it feels like we are in the single digits. I hope you all are wearing your warm coats today... and gloves, scarves - just about EVERYTHING warm you own. You'll need it. In Idaho falls, it was -18 below. Did I tell you I used to live there before I moved here to Boise??? I am SO glad I made the move here. That's freakishly cold. This could happen to you:

Below Zero.jpg

(if you have a beard, that is - fortunately I do not)....

Also, tomorrow we're going to wake up to more snow. Larry is calling for one to two inches. So be ready for that... I'm already trying to devise a plan to convince my husband to clean out the garage today (even though it's filled with most of my junk!) so I can actually park in there. Something tells me that won't happen though. :)

There was a townhouse fire overnight in Boise... it started at 2:30am, and fortunately all the PEOPLE got out safely. But sadly, one family's dog did die in the fire. Fire crews evacuated all the people who live there, and stopped it from spreading to other townhomes. Behind the scenes, there were people in their PJ's out in the cold all over the place... it was a rude awakening to be sure.

Larry is back at work this week, after taking a well deserved Mexican cruise vacation. I am so jealous! A lot of you were wondering where he was... so there you have it. He spent a week, lounging in the sunshine, snorkeling, eating delicious food, and just enjoying a week away with his wife.... ahhhhhhhhhhhh, doesn't that sound heavenly right now?

Cruise.jpg

I'm not sure if the real Larry actually takes Flat Larry with him on vacation... I need to check on that. It might be kinda weird if he did... :)

LARRY.jpg

One good thing came out of his trip for all of us here at home... when he came back, he brought some sunshine with him! Yesterday, it was so nice to see blue skies again, wasn't it? Everyone just seemed happier! I hope we see BLUE SKY today... but I'm not going to hold my breath. :)

Stay warm out there today!

A case of the Mondays...

7:22 AM Mon, Jan 26, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

Have you heard that expression? "Ughhhhh... I have a case of the Mondays!"

Monday.jpg

Question: why are Mondays so dreaded? It's funny how the first day of the week has such a bad name... a stigma almost. After much thought this morning, I have decided Monday is what you make of it. You can putz around and be cranky, or you can take on the day and get things done! (Preferably with a smile, your co-workers/family/friends/pets will appreciate it) Is this positive self talk? Quite possibly. :)

One school closure to report - the Bruneau/Grandview School District is closed due to blowing snow and nasty conditions in the area. It's COLD today! Brrrrrrrrr. 19 degrees at last check -so bundle up no matter where you go.

Do you believe the Special Olympics World Winter Games are just 12 days away! Opening ceremonies are on February 7th. It's almost here...

LOGO.jpg

There is still time to be involved and raise money! You can sell blue "Be a Fan of Joy" bracelets (courtesy of McCain Foods) for $2 each at your school, church, or neighborhood. Check out this flyer!

McCainFoodsFlyer.pdf

Eagle High School Soccer sold 500 bracelets in one week! That's $1,000 dollars for the games! You can call to request a FREE kit of 250 bracelets today - McCain Foods Bracelet Program: 1-888-606-9778. You can also click on our hotlinks for more information. It's a wonderful way to get involved and "Be a Fan"!

Just think, if every school in the Treasure Valley did this, we could raise a lot of moolah for the games... wouldn't that be amazing! Spread the word!

Waking up to snow...

7:33 AM Fri, Jan 23, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

Ahhh... it's always fun to wake up, look out the window - and see snow. Or is it? It's much more fun to stay inside and have hot cocoa on a day like today. (That's just my humble opinion!) But most of us have to go out, clear off the car, drive in it, and work in it etc, etc.

Snow Roads.jpg

Lots of accidents and slide-offs today... but the good news is the rain and snow this weekend could just clear out this inversion, which we'd all appreciate. So, bring it on!

Yesterday - I blogged about the sad story of the cat named "Valentine" with the arrow injury. It's a story a lot of people are talking about.

Cat.jpg

It turns out, a 12 year old boy admitted he is the one who shot the cat, accidentally. He told his Dad he was trying to scare the cat away from some quail, and he didn't know he actually hit it. The case report has been sent to the Gem County Prosecutor's office, so we'll see if he will face any charges. The cat is recovering, and we had some video on the morning news of her eating, and sleeping today - so the good news is she is on the mend!

There's a lot of Dalai Lama Drama right now...

Dalai Lama Drama.jpg

The word is he was UN-invited to the Special Olympics World Winter Games here in Boise. What's the story behind the story? You can watch Alyson Outen's full report on our home page right now.

Guess what? Barack Obama gets to keep his Blackberry! He's an admitted addict (just like so many of us who are glued to our phones) and no president has had a Blackberry before. There's a security risk that goes with it - hackers could access his private emails.

Blackberry Addict.jpg

BUT, President Obama was thrilled to find out he can keep his addiction going! He can only use it with his senior staff and with personal friends. I was sad to hear that, because I was hoping I could text him from time to time with my ideas for our country. Now, that won't happen. (Yeah, right!)

By the way, TGIF... I'm ready for a weekend, are you?

Poor Kitty!

8:07 AM Thu, Jan 22, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

So, by now - you've probably heard about "Valentine", the cat who was hit with an arrow right in her eye. It's a heartbreaking story... and to make matters worse, the vet on the case thinks it was done intentionally. Honestly, I had to turn away from the video on the news this morning. It's even hard for me to show the picture to you, but it's the only way to see just how bad it really is.

Thumbnail image for Poor Kitty.jpg

The good news is the cat had emergency surgery and they got it out safely! At last check, Valentine is in stable but "risky" condition. There is now a $2500 reward for information that leads to the person who did this. I hope the person is caught... there's just no excuse for abusing defenseless animals OR people for that matter. But, that's another topic altogether. :(

We saw some scattered snow today... and Joni Shriver (who is in for Larry - he's on a CRUISE this week, I'm so jealous) says we're going to have a rainy weekend. The SEVEN Day looks pretty wet...

7 DAY.jpg

How many of you LOVE peanut butter? It's a staple in the American diet. I have to say this recall kind of makes me want to eat peanut butter... It's somewhat off limits, so now it looks extra delicious. Weird.

Peanut Butter.jpg

FYI - Petsmart is recalling dog biscuits made with pb paste, and "Dinner's Ready" in Meridian is also recalling any pre-packaged foods from NOV or DEC with peanut sauces or marinades.

Here's some behind the scenes info for you... yesterday we hosted about 50 teenagers from Leadership Boise. It's made up of some of the best and the brightest local high schoolers. The future leaders of the Treasure Valley!

Leadership Boise.JPG

They all had a guided tour, and lunch in the studio during the noon show with Carolyn. As you can see it made for quite the "studio audience"...

Leadership Boise - Carolyn.JPG

And one more fun KTVB fact - two of our producers are pregnant in the newsroom, and yesterday they just happened to wear the same outfit! We all got a kick out of it, so I snapped a pic for the blog:

Haley and Kate.JPG

Haley is the brunette, and she's having a baby boy... Kate is the blonde and she is having a baby girl. It's exciting to see their tummies grow every day. We can't wait for the "newsroom" babies to arrive!

More tomorrow!

10 Inaugural Balls???

8:43 AM Wed, Jan 21, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

Did you catch any of the coverage on the 10, count em' ...TEN... Inaugural Balls last night in prime time?

Party.jpg

It looked like so much fun! President Obama and Michelle made an appearance at each ball, and didn't arrive at the last one until 2:30am. Can you imagine how tired they must be? What a day, and night! I loved Michelle Obama's gown, by the way. I'm a girl, I notice these things... she always looks so classy. Here's a pic, if you missed it:

Michelle Obama - Dress.jpg

Yesterday, I watched the oath with my co-workers here at the office...

Newsroom Obama.JPG

And yes, we work at a TV station with a wide assortment of TV sets, but for some reason - we sat around this teensy tiny TV to do it. I have no idea why:

Newsroom Obama 2.JPG

Despite the itsy bitsy television, it was a momentous occasion. History made.

So, now I need to get used to saying President Barack Obama on the news, and not President Elect Barack Obama. I blew it already once this morning, and my producer quickly got in my ear (not literally IN my ear, in my ear PEICE) and told me "NO NO NO! He's the PRESIDENT now, Maggie!"

Now I have half an eardrum in my left ear, and I will never make that error again. :)

Inauguration Day!

7:36 AM Tue, Jan 20, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

WOW!

Mall Crowd.jpg

What a historic day this is... we're all witnessing history in the making. Seeing the crowds in Washington DC is incredible. Over two million people? It doesn't matter who you voted for - it's just a "Wow" kind of a day. Isn't it? It will be hard not to be glued to the TV all day long. Thank goodness my job allows that... one of the perks of being in television news. It's OK to watch news at work!

Barack Obama.jpg

You can watch LIVE coverage all morning long here on KTVB.com and on Channel 7. Barack Obama will take the oath at 10am - our time. He will use the same bible that Abraham Lincoln used! Talk about history...

It's so cold in DC, that our live reporter there (David Cassidy) had this weird little pop-up tent thing that he used to keep warm in between live reports with us. He would finish his report, pop it open and get in it. Then come back out when we needed him! I felt sorry for him, for just a minute, until I realized he is THERE seeing it all unfold in person. Such a wonderful opportunity, especially if you are in our business. It's a reporter's dream. Pop-up tent or not. :)

Yesterday, I was off for MLK day. (Sorry, no blog!) I had the chance to watch the "I Have a Dream" speech in it's entirety on CNN, and it was just amazing. I don't think I've watched the WHOLE thing since grade school. It brought a tear to my eye... what an incredible man he was. What a speaker... what an inspiration for all of us.

Some good news today... we may just see some BLUE SKY! Joni Shriver is in for Larry this week, he's on vacation - and she says it may happen in the late afternoon. But it won't stay long....

Have a good Tuesday!

Hot Dog Friday?

7:19 AM Fri, Jan 16, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

Last week it was pizza.. this week it's HOT DOGS. Our morning crew likes to spice up Fridays around here, just to kick the weekend off right! We took some behind the scenes snapshots of the hot dog gluttony. Nothing like a hot dog at 5am? WHAT? Here is Doug with our director Cale...

Doug Cale 2.JPG

Hot dogs were enjoyed by all! With all the condiments too. These people come prepared.

Crew.JPG

This is a snap shot of the crew. The people who make "Today's Morning News" happen. Without them, there would be no show!

So, what a day in the good news department! It's so refreshing to have GOOD news to share with all of you. There wasn't a lot of doom and gloom today - which is something to celebrate in my book. :)

We start out with the "Miracle on the Hudson" - that's what the amazing story of survival in New York is being called today on news channels around the country. 150 US Airways passengers (and 5 crew members) survived a frightening crash landing into the Hudson River! They are calling the pilot a hero today... the scary part is - BIRDS caused this plane to go down!

Miracle on the Hudson.jpg

We talked to the Boise Airport tower about how they prevent something like that happening here... they are always on the lookout for birds with binoculars, and they have radar to detect flocks etc.

tower_5950-t240.jpg

Who knew this could be such a problem? We all know now... yikes.

And the Mountain Home Air Force Base welcomed 300 people home yesterday from Afghanistan! Such a happy homecoming! We captured it on video.

Happy Homecoming!.jpg

You can watch it on our homepage. We love bringing you the feel good stories, because they seem to be few and far between these days...

Have a wonderful weekend!

PS... tired of the fog/inversion?? Try our SUNCAM online! It's at the top of the homepage... it will brighten up your cubicle at work, for sure. It works for my little cube!

S.A.D?

7:33 AM Thu, Jan 15, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

It was so hard to get out of bed this morning! For some reason, these inversion conditions make me want to curl up into a ball and stay in bed all day... of course, I have to get up and function. After all, there is news to report. :)
That's what I tell myself at 3am to get motivated!

FOG.jpg

There were some cancellations at the Boise Airport this morning due to last night's heavy fog, but the good news is - everyone was able to get on a later flight this morning. They may have had to wait a while though... that's never fun.

What many people don't know is - this weather can cause Seasonal Affective Disorder - or S.A.D. Just one more disorder to worry about! (I think I'm a victim although I haven't been officially diagnosed) It's just harder to get that "get up and go"... when it's so yucky outside, you know? The good news is you can use light (special lamps, brighter bulbs) to curb the symptoms, and exercise works too. We ran a great story on fighting SAD today on the morning show, and the older couple (this is half of that couple - George - below in the pic) in it is a hoot!

SAD Man.jpg

You must watch it... it'll make you giggle. I certainly did! You can check it out on our homepage.

I'm headed to Eagle High School today to shoot a "7's Hero" segment on the soccer team. The team raised a bunch of money for The Special Olympics World Winter Games - we're going to take a look at how other schools can get involved, and do the same thing. There is still time!

The games are now less than a month away! WOW! I'm excited...

The inversion has arrived!

8:15 AM Wed, Jan 14, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

I'm sure you've all noticed, it's foggy out there this morning! Larry says these inversion conditions will stick around all week long. There were some delays at BOI last night, so be sure to call ahead on your flights today. Take a look at the 7 Day Forecast below. Uggghhhhhhh... not good. This kind of weather can be depressing! Not seeing the sun for days at a time is never fun. Unless you like that sort of thing!

7 DAY.jpg

Two bank robbers are on the loose today in the Treasure Valley. We have surveillance pictures of them - take a good look - do you know them? This guy robbed a Wells Fargo branch on Karcher Road in Nampa:

Wells Fargo Robber.jpg

And this guy robbed the Washington Mutual on Federal Way in Boise - it's harder to see him, isn't it? Just a wee bit. But you never know...

Wamu Robber.jpg

And finally - one peice of news to blog about for Boise State football fans! Jeremy Childs will not be coming back next year. The redshirt Junior has decided to enter the NFL draft.

Jeremy Childs.jpg

You have to wonder, would finishing up at BSU (so he can graduate) be a better option. He could try to go pro after that, right? Then we could have him another year!

But maybe that's just me (and other Bronco Fans out there) being selfish - the guy's gotta chase his dreams... good luck to Jeremy!

Cuts, cuts, cuts... :(

7:50 AM Tue, Jan 13, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

Well, as expected - Governor Otter's State of the State address was pretty grim... he's proposing cuts all across the board. It seems most agencies/departments will take a big hit in fiscal year 2009-2010.

Otter Budget.jpg

Of course, this all needs to be approved by the legislature during the session. We'll see how long it takes our lawmakers to agree on all of the issues we are facing! It could be a LONG session. You can read and watch the speech on ktvb.com.

On another (sad) note - More people are losing jobs this week... St. Alphonsus is cutting 66 people. The Ada County DMV dropped 6 people and will not fill four other open positions.

It's foggy out there this morning! Heavy fog and low visibility made for a long commute... Larry says it should clear out in a few hours.

Fog 2.jpg

Today, I was flying solo on the show because Doug worked a long day covering Otter's speech yesterday. It's always kind of lonely without him!

Doug and ME.jpg

It's much more fun to have someone to talk to next to me... he'll be back tomorrow. The good news is I always have our trusty crew in studio. I need to take a picture of all of them and post it on the blog, so you can see who works with me behind the scenes! I will do that one of these days...

They are so helpful and nice - helping me juggle the "supplies" I bring out on set every morning... coffee cup, water, makeup, papers, pens, mirror, hairspray, etc. I am always running late and stumbling and dropping things (and at times tripping) on my way out to my chair on set. It's like a comedic obstacle course and it should be set to music... too bad I don't have video of that for you. :) They laugh at me and with me... I just love our crew!

Now, you get a glimpse of how glamorous TV news really is...

Hope you all have a good Tuesday.

State of our State?

7:40 AM Mon, Jan 12, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

Today at 3pm - Governor Otter will present his State of the State (and Budget) address... last year his opening line of this same speech was:

"It's my great pleasure to report to you today, Idaho's economy is fundamentally sound..."

Oh, what a difference a year makes! Today, we'll most likely hear about our tough economy, job cuts, and where our state lawmakers plan to spend (or not spend) money. We'll have live coverage at 3pm, and then analysis from the KTVB team right after. You can also watch it all online at ktvb.com if you don't have access to a TV.

New numbers released say 50,000 Idahoans are looking for work right now! The unemployment rate is at 6.6%. I'm sure you know people who have recently lost jobs. I certainly do. It's so horrible. And you know what? I don't hear a lot of friends, family etc. complaining about their jobs these days, I used to hear that a lot. I think people are just grateful to be working... and realizing how fortunate they are. I know I am.

Just so the blog isn't all doom and gloom today - (that's never good on a Monday!) here is some positive news. Mortgage rates are down... Financial Planner Dave Petso says it's a great time to refinance, or buy if you are in a position to do so. There are some great deals out there in the housing market. You can get so much more house for your buck in this market! (Of course, I bought my house at the peak of housing prices... oh well, that's life as it is!)

One more thing to leave you with... Zoo Boise's baby red panda has come out of hiding to meet her public! She is super cute but looks more like a racoon to me, than a panda. What do you think?

Red Panda Baby.jpg

This little panda is only one of 12 red pandas to have survived in the United States this year. We are so lucky to have her! She will be part of the African Plains Exhibit. The baby panda does not have a name yet, but there will be a competition to do that in the near future. I have a couple of ideas... how about Racoon-da? Panda-coon? I'm sure some smart kiddies at one of our local elementary schools will have way better ideas! They always seem to get to name the new animals at the zoo...

Enjoy your Monday!

Ahhhh... Friday, at last!

8:06 AM Fri, Jan 09, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

I love Fridays... for obvious reasons. I'm sure you love them too. But be prepared, Larry says it's going to be cold this weekend, highs in the 30's... and lows in the 20's. So be sure to bundle up for all your fun weekend activities here in the Treasure Valley!

Well, there's no good way to say this - our state economic situation is a bit gloomy right now. Yesterday, Gov. Otter said state job cuts could be a lot worse than we thought.

Otter.jpg

We thought 100 jobs would be lost, but now Otter says it may be more than that. His state of the state and budget address is Monday at 3pm... you can watch it live here on Channel 7 or online. Hopefully he'll have some light to share at the end of this tunnel.

In political news, it looks like the highly publicized Larry Craig story may finally be over. Yesterday, his lawyer said former Senator Craig will not be asking the Minnesota Supreme Court to void his conviction for that now famous airport bathroom incident.

Craig.jpg

The court would not accept a petition for review of the case - so it looks like it's all over. Craig insists he's innocent.

And - finally, the hip Aspen Lofts in downtown Boise (9th and Front) are almost complete! They are also nicknamed the "skinny condos" because they aren't very wide. Take a look -

Skinny Condos.jpg

I would love to live in one of these, wouldn't you? Look at the view! WOW!

Skinny Condo View 2.jpg

There is a slideshow and some more info on our homepage. Pretty neat, and right in the heart of downtown. I wonder how the closet space is??? Hmmmm.....

Have a great Friday everyone and enjoy your weekend.... :)

PS. Tune in Sunday night at 10pm for my Seven's Hero this week! Two incredible people who are "giving back" in their golden years! Quite an inspiration....

Pizza in the studio?

7:18 AM Thu, Jan 08, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

So - here's some behind the scenes scoop for you - after all that talk yesterday about pizza and Flying Pie's Costa Rican Vacation - the morning crew decided today was a great day to make pizza here at the station! All show long, the amazing smell of delectible pizza baking in the oven was looming in the air. A great way to start the morning... :)

The weather today is mild, and the commute should be a breeze! It feels spring-like out there today... a nice change from the cold. Enjoy it, because Larry says it won't last. You can check out the 7 DAY on our weather page.

Yesterday you may have seen that Tamara Narad (see pic) was nabbed for allegedly stealing almost 100k worth of stuff from people's homes in our area.

Narad.jpg

Boise Police say it was all to support her meth habit, most of the stuff was pawned, and that's how police say they tracked her. Some of you may know that KTVB's Ysabel Bilbao's house was recently broken into - and someone stole her Christmas! Literally. All her gifts for her family under the tree, and many valuables were taken. We're wondering if this woman could be responsible? Police are working to find out.

On a lighter note, I got a call yesterday from a viewer - Al Spaulding - from Meridian. He left me a message on my voice mail saying he met my parents! I was kind of shocked since they live in California... (see pic of them below) I thought to myself - how did their paths cross? I must admit I was a little nervous, because my parents love to talk - and when I say talk, I mean talk about ME. That scares me just a wee bit. :) I was thinking what embarrassing stories will they tell poor Al about me?? LOL.

James, me, Mom and Dad.JPG

Well, I called Al, and he gave me the low down... Apparently, he was at the Phoenix airport baggage claim, wearing a BSU sweatshirt. My parents were there too, and saw the good ol' blue and orange (they are big BSU fans too) - they had to ask: "Do you live in BOISE?" Al said YES! And was probably wondering to himself "who are these people!" - Then my parents proceeded to talk this man's ear off about how I'm their child and and how I work at Channel 7 etc. My parents still think I'm a "child", because I'm the 5th kid, and I have no children of my own yet. I guess you stop being a child when you have a child? :)

The good news is, Al wasn't subjected to any embarrassing stories! Or so he says...

We're half way through the work week...

8:20 AM Wed, Jan 07, 2009 |
Maggie O'Mara

It's Wednesday, and I like Wednesdays for some reason. Knowing Friday is close at hand makes me happy! Sleeping in (or sleeping at all) is so precious on this shift, so my weekends are primarily spent in pajamas. Heaven!

So much to blog about today! Where shall I begin?

First up - did you watch The Biggest Loser last night? I so admire Mandi and Aubrey, the local sisters who are losing weight on national television - for all to see!

aubrey_thumb1.png

mandi_thumb1.png

We talked to Mandi and she told us they work out 6 to 8 HOURS per day! Yikes! She called it a "VIOLENT SHOVE" into weight loss... but she's thrilled to have the opportunity. She wouldn't tell us if they are currently winning OR how many pounds they have lost so far - they have to keep that a secret - or face the wrath of NBC! So, we'll just have to watch every Tuesday at 7pm to see how the sisters are doing...

Remember when I blogged about how in the world these contestants pay the bills while they spend all those months away from home on the "Ranch"? I got my answer! Our co-worker Tim, who freelanced for the show when they were shooting here in Boise - emailed me about that:

"Well, I happened to get lucky enough to work for the show while they were in town and I got the chance to ask the producer all sorts of questions. So, the answer is, they do give them a small stipend while they're on the show. He said they normally don't spend any money while they're on the Ranch, so it all goes back to their families and to their bills. He didn't give me the details as to how much, and I didn't want to ask."

So there you have it! Tim is such a great source for the scoop!

Did you hear about Peterson's two for one car deal? It was featured on The Today Show today! The dealership will give you a cute little Chevy Cobalt (here's a pic)...

Free Car.jpg

...if, and the key word is IF you buy a Cadillac SUV or pickup! That's a $13,500 dollar value. The dealership tells us no one has actually taken the Cobalt yet- they have taken a $13,500 discount instead! It's pretty incredible what dealerships are doing across the country to get customers to buy cars. Of course, the cars that qualify for this deal range from 40k to 70k... so you'll be spending some CASH for that little Cobalt.

Another fun story to talk about today - Flying Pie Pizza! The two restaurants in the Treasure Valley are closing up shop for a whole week so the employees can go to Costa Rica.

fp_logo.jpg

WHAT???? Here's the story behind it - the employees have been saving 10 percent of their tips for TEN YEARS. Now, they have enough money to send everyone on a fabulous vacation! Both locations will be closed from January 13th to January 19th. Then they will all be back to make your fave pizzas. Thank goodness. We have some Flying Pie addicts around here at KTVB - it is across the street after all!

It's slushy and wet out there today, watch for puddles on the roads and in the parking lots... after two days of snow, you'll need your golashes today. Does anyone really use that word anymore? Golashes? Does anyone actually have them? Are they in style? Probably not, but I'll tell you what... I need them!

Have a great Wednesday...

More snow???

It just keeps on coming - doesn't it? The roads are terrible today! Accidents and slide offs are keeping local police pretty busy. We also have several late starts at schools, and a closure. Check the homepage for that info.

We had Rick in again today to team report the snow - and because we had so much weather coverage - I think I read about six stories all morning long... it was like a mini-vacation. Doug and I sat there on set drinking our coffee and just watching Rick, Larry and Edgar do their thing!

Yesterday - you may have seen that we had a scary story about the attempted kidnapping of a local 2-year-old boy:

Kidnap Boy.jpg

His grandpa fought off the man who police say tried to take the little guy! He didn't even have his shoes on, and he chased the suspect through the snow! Talk about a hero. Police captured the suspect - here is his pic.

Danny Ray Watson, 39 now faces attempted kidnapping and battery charges.

Some exciting news now... the new season of The Biggest Loser starts tonight right here on NBC! Two Idaho contestants will be debuting - and we need to watch and cheer them on... They are sisters. Mandi is from Boise and is a cosmetologist - and Aubrey is from Gooding, and is an I & E Specialist!
Mandy - The Biggest Loser.jpg

Recently the production crew from the show was in town to get some footage of these sisters, and one of my co-workers - Tim Orme - freelanced as a camera man on the shoot! He couldn't reveal too much, but this is what he emailed me about his experience:

"Both the girls were amazing. Very nice, and truly inspiring. They have lost a lot of weight (I can't say how much), but they barely look like the same people you will see on NBC's promo for the show."

He also told me the crew ate regularly - they weren't on a special diet! :)
Tune in for The Biggest Loser tonight at 7pm. It's two hours! It should be really fun to watch Mandi and Aubrey's progress!

Let it BLOW!

Let it snow! Or shall we say, let it BLOW?

It's very windy out there, and that combined with the snow is making the weather conditions pretty nasty today. There are several school closures due to weather - the list is on our homepage. The University of Idaho campus in Moscow is closed today too! It must be bad there as well. I must admit, I often wish for snow days here at Channel 7, but for some reason they want us to come in and COVER the storm - not stay home and make snow angels. :)

Rick Lantz came in early so we could do team report weather. He was in the studio, Larry was outside, and Edgar took on the road report. We like to go BIG when we have something to talk about. We bring the whole crew in! Rick is always fun to have in the studio with us - today he called Edgar "Ed" a few times and that made us all laugh. For a minute, I was thinking "who is Ed?" Poor Rick, it's hard to come in early and work the night shift too. He's sleep deprived to be sure. We laugh a lot behind the scenes, it keeps our energy up, and it keeps the crew in a good mood!

Speaking of what we do behind the scenes - I came across this anchor team "Dance" online - and I had to share it with you. I was so impressed! Now I have to say, I'm not coordinated enough to pull this off - not by a long shot - and Doug isn't either. (Sorry, Doug! But I think you would agree with me on this one?) We both enjoyed watching it though. I think you will too. Copy and paste this link into your browser and enjoy!

Hope you have a great Monday, and stay safe out on the roads! With a high of just 33 degrees today, it's going to be icy out there.

Welcome to 2009...

I can't believe it's January 2, 2009. The real test for all of us will be writing checks - I'm still writing 2007 on my checks right now... I will have to remedy that!

It's 50 degrees out there this morning. Warm and balmy for winter in Idaho! Larry says this is the calm before the storm - more COLD weather is expected this weekend and next week. So enjoy the mild temperatures today while you can.

There were close to 40 DUI arrests in the Treasure Valley on New Year's Eve. We knew it would be a high number - 2008 was a banner year for drunk driving arrests. Pretty sad. Police can't really say why...

Also, the tragic story of the little girl who died of hypothermia on Christmas continues to develop. What happened to 11 year old Sage Aragon is even making national news headlines. I saw it on CNN Headline News... it was a big topic of debate - with people calling in with opinions on what happened and who is to blame.

Sage Aragon.jpg

We've learned Sage's uncle is also being charged for 2nd degree murder in her death. He'll be in court today. Her father, Robert Aragon - has already been charged. He was released from jail to pay his respects at her memorial. What do you think about that? People have mixed feelings on it.

Here's a recap of what happened - Sage and her brother were with their father and uncle when their truck broke down in a snow storm. They were then allowed to walk to their mother's house - a 10 mile trip in the snow - and they never made it. Police say the Dad didn't follow up to make sure the kids were okay. Sage was found dead the next day in the snow, her brother somehow survived at a rest area. You can read more about this heart wrenching story on KTVB.com's home page.

Some good, heartwarming news for you now... The first babies of the New Year at St. Alphonsus - were twin girls! How sweet is that? Here's a pic!

New babies.jpg

Congratulations to the Bour family of Meridian. What a way to start out 2009!

At my house, New Year's Day was all about football and prime rib. The VERY kind butcher at Albertsons on Fairview and Cole was kind enough to give me his "Family Recipe" - and being a novice at this cooking thing - I certainly needed it! It turned out great, thanks to him - and my husband was in heaven. I've already shared the recipe with half our morning crew. They are all thinking "Geez, if Maggie (of all people) can do this, so can we!" Isn't that the truth! :)

Have a great weekend...
