Chemical spill

A toxic spill closed the interstate in eastern Oregon for nearly four hours last night. A Washington man was seriously injured. It happened on I-84 between La Grande and Baker City. A semi-truck carrying a dangerous liquid rolled over.

A fire fighter from La Grande who is part of the haz-mat team that responded to the scene. He says they have reports that at least one person on scene was feeling ill from the chemical spill, but he believes that person was treated on scene.

The truck driver that was injured is at St. Alphonsus hospital right now. He is in critical condition.

Police say a woman was driving in the slow lane with her flashers on when, a semi truck carrying dangerous liquid came up behind her and swerved to miss her car. The semi truck rolled over once, and the trailer fell on its side. Liquid chromic acid was inside the trailer -- it's estimated 300 to 400 gallons of the liquid spilled on to the shoulder of the road. When the acid is mixed with air it becomes a breathing hazard.

Haz-mat crews were sent to the scene and the interstate was closed between La Grande to Baker City for four hours.
