Hells Canyon fire now nation's top priority
By KTVB.COM staff
A 26,000 acre fire is burning in the Hell's Canyon area at this hour. The Foster Gulch complex fire is the nation's number one firefighting priority, according to crews on scene.
More than 800 firefighters are on the fire lines near Halfway, OR. Highway 86 is closed due to heavy smoke and dangerous conditions.
As many as 90 structures are threatened - including a number of homes. Fire officials tell NewsChannel 7 that protecting homes is the top priority.
A major power line in the area is also threatened by flames. An Idaho Power spokesperson says that there is the potential for lines to be damaged, and the loss of any line in the Hell's Canyon Complex area could affect the company's ability to transmit power from the area. Hell's Canyon produces about 58 percent of Idaho Power's total capacity.
Idaho Power is working with Forest Service officials to closely monitor the power situation.
Aircraft has been called in to the area -- helping offset the challenges of rugged terrain for ground based crews.
